Since ancient times, Spain has been a land of age-old roads, traveled by civilizations, traders, artists, pilgrims, and visionaries. Today, these routes are reborn through a new cultural and tourism initiative: Cruce de Caminos – Cultural Routes of Spain, a project that celebrates eight major heritage routes crossing the country from north to south and east to west, traversing regions rich in history, diversity, and life.
The Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset once wrote that “Spain is a whirlwind of dust on the road of history after a great people has galloped through.” These roads have not only shaped the geography of the country, but also its soul—connecting landscapes, cultures, and eras that now invite rediscovery. This project offers an invitation to travel and forge new paths through the living history of Spain.

Cruce de Caminos: Living Gateways to Spain’s History
Among this network of ancient routes, certain places stand out as true Cruce de Caminos—strategic cities and towns where two or more of the eight major cultural routes intersect. These are meeting points of civilizations, time periods, and landscapes, where travelers will find not only heritage and beauty, but also a key to unlock a rich cultural universe.
The current Cruce de Caminos identified in the project include:
Andalusia: Carmona, one of the most important heritage ensembles in the region; Baena, an ancient city with significant archaeological sites and an Easter Week declared of National Tourist Interest; and Alcalá la Real, whose Fortaleza de la Mota was crucial on the Nasrid frontier.
Extremadura: Cáceres, a monumental city where Roman, Islamic, and Renaissance legacies coexist; and Mérida, former capital of Roman Hispania and an open-air museum of antiquity.
Castile and León: León, with Roman origins and Gothic splendor; Burgos, birthplace of El Cid and home to a UNESCO World Heritage cathedral; and Frómista, known for the impressive San Martín church, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture.
Aragon: Albarracín, a legendary Islamic-era town suspended in the canyons of the Guadalaviar River.
Cantabria: Ramales de la Victoria, a natural and historic site along the route of prehistoric caves.
Valencian Community: Benassal, nestled in the Maestrazgo mountains, where history and millenary traditions remain alive.
Each of these places is a strategic hub in the project, a privileged starting point for exploring over 5,000 kilometers of signposted routes stretching across Spain. Here, travelers can pause, orient themselves, and open the door to a historical journey without borders—where history isn’t just observed, but experienced.
Where the Past Lives On: Canals, Monasteries, and Timeless Art
Across Spain, the cultural routes traverse landscapes that whisper tales of spirituality, engineering, ancient art, and imperial legacy. The Canal de Castilla, an 18th-century marvel of engineering, offers a unique perspective on the Spanish plateau and invites hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and navigation aboard tourist boats.
The Cluny Ibérica route links ancient monasteries and major Romanesque and Gothic landmarks that once served as beacons of medieval thought and are at the roots of the continental European spirit. These expansive estates now allow for a deep cultural experience, walking through cloisters and wandering through symbolically and spiritually rich landscapes.
The Camino del Cid is a 2,000-kilometer cultural tourism route that cuts across Spain from inland Castile and Aragón to the Mediterranean, following the historical and literary footsteps of El Cid Campeador. It’s a journey through medieval memory, small towns, wide open natural spaces, and heritage of remarkable significance.
The Routes of Prehistoric Rock Art transport travelers to the origins of art, with cave paintings and engravings over 20,000 years old at iconic sites like the Altamira Caves. This route offers an immersive way to explore a legacy that blends nature, symbolism, and emotional resonance.
Finally, the Routes of Charles V trace the Emperor’s many journeys across the Iberian Peninsula. Through castles, villages, and historical reenactments, this route also welcomes walkers, cyclists, and camper travelers, offering full immersion in local heritage and gastronomy.
Routes Where Ancient Civilizations Converge
Spain is a vibrant crossroads of cultures, a land shaped by Roman splendor, Islamic heritage, and living traditions that still pulse strongly in every corner. The Vía de la Plata Route is a living testimony to centuries of history, connecting Gijón to Seville via Roman roads, monumental cities, and a unique cultural richness—with highlights including León, Cáceres, and Mérida, the latter once the capital of Roman Hispania.
The Roman Baetica Route explores the grandeur of Rome in Hispania, with jewels like Itálica (Santiponce), where theatres, mosaics, and baths still evoke the empire’s heart. Meanwhile, Caminos de Pasión celebrates vibrant local identities and ways of life in Andalusia, where Easter Week opens a year-round calendar of sacred art, festivities, and deep-rooted traditions.
These routes invite travelers to discover Spain through cycling tourism, Mediterranean gastronomy, and participation in local celebrations—offering authentic immersion in the heritage and culture of diverse regions.
