ceviche-equador NEW YORK (Aug. 1, 2015) – Ecuador’s Ministry of Tourism is proud to announce that the Galapagos Islands have been honored as “World’s Best” by Travel + Leisure magazine. This consumer-based nomination recognizes the best of the best in travel across various categories including airlines, cities, destination spas, hotels, islands, tour operators and safari outfitters among others. The Galapagos Islands were not only ranked first on the list of Best Islands, but were the only ones in the American continent to be profiled.

“We are so proud of all that our country has to offer and are thrilled that Travel + Leisure readers recognize the beauty, diversity and culture that can be found in the Galapagos,” “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who voted for us and encourage consumers to visit Ecuador and experience the Islands for themselves.”

Situated in the Pacific Ocean 600 miles from the Ecuadorian coast, the archipelago and marine reserve known as the Galapagos Islands offers a natural paradise showcasing unique species and biodiversity not found anywhere else in the world. In 1978 the Galapagos Islands, which have been described as a “living museum and showcase of evolution,” were declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Highlights of the Islands include the Charles Darwin Station, a scientific investigation center; the Galapagos Marine Reserve, an underwater wildlife spectacle with abundant life ranging from corals, sharks, penguins to marine mammals; as well as Tortuga Bay, a white-sand, turquoise water beach that welcomes hundreds of turtles each year during nesting season.

Wow – great news that the Galapagos Islands have been honored as “World’s Best” by Travel + Leisure magazine. We concur. We were there for a fantastic week in 2009. The highlight of our visit was the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island where we were able to see and photograph a giant tortoise named Lonesome George known as a symbol for the disappearing species and of the Galapagos Islands. Giant tortoises can survive well past a hundred, with the oldest recorded at 152. Lonsome George died in 2012. Very good article, Dave.

I was in Quito not that long ago and the “Volcano Road” but have not yet had the opportunity to visit the Galapagos. They are definitely on my list 🙂
