The Art of Not Doing: The Red Centre, Northern Territory, Australia

February 1, 2015 by Richard Bangs1 Comment

In the eager pool of morning light there rises The Rock. It is perhaps the most iconic symbol of the implacable indifferences of inhospitable landscapes, its dimensions timeless, unsummarized. And I want to climb it. There is something in the Western mindset that arouses a near irresistible urge to climb a peak. We look up, we admire, and if possible, we act. It may be related to a primal impulse to conquer a headland, to be king of the … [Read more...]

Greetings from Doha, Qatar – Just Another Beautiful Sunny Day

January 30, 2015 by Dave2 Comments

With no causeway over the open sea yet built between Bahrain and Qatar - the most convenient way between each country is via plane. It is a very short flight - something like 130km with maybe 30 minutes in air. My flight was empty - the few people on this Qatar Airways flight each had their own row as well as several rows of extra empty space around them. We were given little candies upon takeoff. Doha Airport is large, modern, gleaming and … [Read more...]

An Insiders Perspective: Night tour of Bahrain

January 24, 2015 by Dave6 Comments

In doing some research prior to my travel to Bahrain I stumbled upon a website advertising private tours. I emailed the owner, Hanan (she no longer offers tours) but she kindly agreed to meetup after work. This was a real insiders tour from someone who grew up in Bahrain and knows the island extremely well. Her diversity of interests, local knowledge and passion for both travel and for Bahrain were clearly evident. We immediately drove to some … [Read more...]

Gliding to Confidence in Hocking Hills, Ohio

January 19, 2015 by Marianne RuaneLeave a Comment

One of my favorite activities is hiking, yet I’m afraid of heights. I love trying different modes of transportation in my explorations, but I’ve been seasick on whale watching trips and catamaran booze cruises. While I’m a huge fan of beautiful views, driving in elevation, particularly if the roads wind and twist, tends to make me carsick. I generally feel colder than everyone else around me. To function at an optimal level, I need to eat more, … [Read more...]

Arlo by Netgear

January 12, 2015 by Dave1 Comment

This security camera system swooped (their logo is a small bird) into the market in late 2014. This camera and setup is ideal for monitoring home or office setups and or keeping an extra "eye" on your belongings while you are on vacation (the recordings are viewable remotely via a website - see below for more details). The cameras can be setup both indoors or outdoors (the camera's are weatherproof). Disclaimer: I am a NETGEAR Ambassador and … [Read more...]

The Magic of Arashan, Kyrgyzstan

January 10, 2015 by Dave4 Comments

Arashan is a trek that gets under your skin; it is a four to five hour hike up a rutted and rough dirt road alongside a raging river. From Karokal you can take mini bus number 350 - it is about 30 minutes to the drop off point. Or you can take a taxi for about 350 som. You can certainly hike this yourself in the summer - allow 4-5 hours along a very rocky rough dirt road that follows a quickly flowing river for much of the way until the road … [Read more...]

Ozzywood: Extras at Ayers Rock

December 15, 2014 by John Edwards1 Comment

John M. Edwards lucks out on a lucrative commercial gig at Australia’s awesome Uluru (Ayers Rock)—but with one problem: he was not actually cast to be in it! Celebration of a nation! Celebration of a nation! Let’s make it great . . . In 88! Come on and give us a hand! --“Australian Bicentennial,” Mojo Advertising Co. I lucked out finally while on a much-needed “smoko” at the Alice Springs Abattoirs, where I worked for … [Read more...]

Bhutan: My Trek in Paro Chhu Valley, Jomolhari and my time in Thimphu

December 2, 2014 by Shyam K.2 Comments

April 6th, SFO–Osaka–Bangkok My flight at 1055 was to Osaka (KIX) with another flight continuing on to Bangkok (BKK). My flight is delayed by one hour. I arrive at the airport at 0955 but the check-in agent needs to see an onward ticket from BKK and does not know where Bhutan is - and has not heard about Druk Air either! It takes 30 min, even though there are few people in the check-in queue while he verifies Thailand entry requirements for … [Read more...]
