Matka Canyon, Macedonia

September 12, 2012 by Dave3 Comments

Pulled into Skopje late last night and like many of the cities in the nearby countries - easily found free wifi - a lifesaver when you are winging every hotel or hostel at the last minute. Looking for a break from the fast paced travel of the last few days - I got up Sunday morning and caught the early bus to Matka - which is just on the outskirts of the city. Most cities would kill to have a place like this within spitting distance of its … [Read more...]

Gold Mining, An Introduction to Prospecting

by Dave · 5 Comments

The following Gold Mining Article first appeared in the August 2001 issue of Upbeat Times and has been heavily revised since then. Read on for info about Gold Mining, Prospecting, Metal Detecting, Gold Panning and how to find gold nuggets. Gold is valuable - why? It is the most non-reactive metal found meaning it does not rust or corrode like other metals. Place a nugget of gold and a piece of iron or aluminum in the sea for several weeks. … [Read more...]

Rural Romanian Village Homestay

September 7, 2012 by Dave16 Comments

Greetings from rural Romania! After a smooth 2 hour train ride I was met at the station depot by Mr. Saure, an agronomist engineer who volunteered to show me around town. He spoke very little English - so we headed right to the local museum where we were met by Dan who spoke very good English. This museum is not your typical village museum - rather it encompasses 40 acres of which a number is set aside for orchards, a demo vineyard and many … [Read more...]

Pele’s Castle and the Dracula Castle

August 31, 2012 by Dave1 Comment

Today I toured the mountainous countryside about 2-3 hours outside of Bucharest. Two highlights of the day: Pele's castle is one of the most amazing castles in the country. It is the former home of the Romanian Royal Family (all originally from Germany). The small town of Bran is the home of the "Dracula's Castle" the castle that played a role in the inspiration for Bram Stoker's book Dracula. "Dracula" has very little to do with Romanian … [Read more...]

Exploring Bucharest

August 26, 2012 by Dave2 Comments

After a quick glimpse and walk around old town at 7am in the morning - this part of Bucharest seems to be old world meets construction zone. Apparently this part of Bucharest is seeing a revitalization of sorts - not sure where the money is coming from for this but there are a number of major projects in this part of town including businesses remodeling their own buildings in the middle of the old city. As someone I met last night mentioned, … [Read more...]

August 23, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Children at the Community School for Creative Education in Oakland saw their ideal play space designs become reality on Saturday, August 18. In just six hours, the “my dream playground” posters the kids had drawn were transformed into a creative, colorful play environment. Teams of volunteers assembled a steel and plastic playground structure with a twisted slide, monkey bars and lots of components for climbing and exploring. Some built a … [Read more...]
