An Island Beach Where Three Could be a Crowd

May 4, 2012 by Paul KandarianLeave a Comment

I mean really, where did this crowd come from? We are at White Beach on privately owned Guana Island in the British Virgin Islands, a blindingly bright half-mile stretch of sand that Caribbean Travel and Leisure once dubbed one of the BVI's best beaches. Besides us, there are five people here, two to our right in lounge chairs, two at a small beach bar, and one swaying in a rope hammock beneath a giant tree. To our left - nothing but … [Read more...]

The Foods of Jamaica

April 25, 2012 by Allison TibaldiLeave a Comment

I grew up in a New York City apartment building with many Jamaican neighbors. The fragrant spices and vibrant flavors of the Jamaican kitchen have been part of my culinary lexicon since childhood. The scent of simmering curried goat regularly wafted in the hallway as the tunes of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh blared from the stereo. When I eventually ventured to the island as an adult, I felt a gustatory homecoming of sorts. The fusion of flavors … [Read more...]

Varadero Golf Club – A Paradise for Golfers

March 6, 2012 by Habeeb SalloumLeave a Comment

"I must come back and enjoy this golf course!" my colleague sighed as we stood beside the 'Xanadu Mansion', the Club House of the Varadero Golf Club - Cuba's only 18-hole golf course. He went on, "Imagine we can combine a holiday by everyday romping on this beautiful beach with its talcum sand and relaxing waters then play [playing] a game of golf. It will be a perfect vacation for golfers seeking a fulfilling holiday." My colleague had a … [Read more...]

St. John

June 28, 2011 by Paul KandarianLeave a Comment

You think hockey, you think cold. You think St. John in the Caribbean, you think hot. When you combine the two, what do you get? If you're very lucky, a Boston Bruins Stanley Cup championship. That improbable confluence happened for me when I was staying at Kismet on St. John, a gorgeous, five-bedroom villa of Moroccan design high atop Maria's Bluff, between Cruz Bay and Chocolate Hole. I'm a hockey nut in general, and about my Boston … [Read more...]

cruise stop greece

This is the season for vacations and probably a goodly number of Dave's Travel Corner readers will take a cruise. Today's cruises-unless they are aboard a river raft on the Amazon-offer our grandest dreams of indulgence. These are floating luxury resorts, dedicated to recreation, education, cultural enrichment-and SHOPPING. I've chalked up my sixth cruise by now on the world's seas, rivers, and through locks and fiords. (I'm not counting the … [Read more...]

Vanuatu: One of the World’s Remaining Paradises

June 4, 2011 by Andrea WilsonLeave a Comment

When you think of a romantic island vacation, what do you imagine? Basking away peaceful days in the sun, just you and your special someone? Stealing away to hidden beaches where you frolic in the waves like children, uninterrupted by human life? Sipping a drink in your beach chair with a view over your feet that could easily be the setting for a Corona commercial? Picturesque, pristine, and private- this is the dream setting for couples … [Read more...]

Chatting with the Captain

May 23, 2011 by Allen L. HottLeave a Comment

"It is more a mission or a passion. Much more than just a job or a profession." With those words Captain Vito Giacalone of Carnival Cruise Lines began our interview recently while aboard the "Imagination" sailing in the blue Caribbean waters. "Having a tuna fisherman for a father and living by the sea all of my life, it was a very natural fit for me to want to become a captain of a ship," he continued. "But how does it all come about? … [Read more...]

Long Weekend in Puerto Rico

May 8, 2011 by Dave4 Comments

Spend a Long Weekend in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is an ideal Caribbean Island for a number of reasons; history - with buildings that date back to the 1520's there is no older "western culture" in the Western Hemisphere. Christopher Columbus claimed Puerto Rico for Spain in 1493. Food - Puerto Rican cuisine is Spanish & Caribbean influenced, outdoor activities, water sports, great beaches and ease of travel. Its a "fly and drive" destination. … [Read more...]
