A Dingle Story

August 18, 2015 by Cecile RiphagenLeave a Comment

Travel is about moments suspended in time. When travelling I try to consider a place my temporary home. Running around, visiting one sight after the other in order to tick off the list of sights you really have to see and cannot miss, blurs one’s mind into one undistinguished pile of memories of churches, castles, landscapes, cafés, restaurants and other things you have visited but actually can’t remember. You look back at all those pictures you … [Read more...]

Where Eagles Roam: Howe Sound, British Columbia

August 16, 2015 by Kevin Nelson6 Comments

Perched on a rock in the middle of Howe Sound, less than a half hour from downtown Vancouver, was one of nature’s grandest flying creatures: a bald eagle. Though we could not see the bird in its entirety, we could not miss its white head gazing down imperiously on a pod of harbor seals snoozing in the sun below. Our 30-foot-long rigid hull inflatable boat, powered by twin 225-horsepower Mercury Verrado engines, motored slowly by as the six of … [Read more...]

Pittsburgh: Land of Celebrities

August 14, 2015 by Marianne RuaneLeave a Comment

I am a self-acknowledged history nerd with a film degree. I had no idea that Pittsburgh had an abundance of sites covering my two big interests - colonial and current celebrities. Mostly I am interested in the places celebrities were - so that I can stand in, sit on, or touch the same spot. I imagine I am forging a connection that transcends space and time, that the celebrity's genius energy can infiltrate my own and affect it in a positive … [Read more...]

A Maine Culinary Windfall Aboard the Windjammer Stephen Taber

August 12, 2015 by Allison TibaldiLeave a Comment

I had long dreamed of sailing Maine’s ruggedly beautiful coast on a rustic windjammer. It sounded like the perfect back-to-nature panacea for my urban existence in New York City. This July, I booked a three-day cruise on the schooner Stephen Taber. First launched in 1871, it’s the oldest documented sailing vessel in continuous service in the United States and a tribute to 19th century craftsmanship. I had already spent time in Maine, so I … [Read more...]

Ever Considered Sailing in the BVI?

August 11, 2015 by Dave BeanLeave a Comment

What is a holiday of a lifetime? We have all heard this claim at one time or another... but in our neck of the woods we hear it all the time. Things like "best ever...", "can't wait to do it again...", "at last we found paradise..." are just a few of the comments that have become synonymous with a sailing vacation in the British Virgin Islands. Surprisingly... many people don't know that such vacations are possible and many that are aware that … [Read more...]

Port Moresby Nature Park- Papua New Guinea – August 2015

August 1, 2015 by Dave1 Comment

This attraction on the outskirts of Port Moresby (mile marker 14) is well worth visiting. The gardens are meticulously maintained and there are always a number of orchids in bloom regardless of the time of year your visit. Workers are available to help guide you or answer any questions. The orchid gardens are part of a fairly new Adventure park which also contains a tall water-slide when you want to beat the heat. This nature park was founded … [Read more...]

Travel in Harry Potter’s Footsteps in Scotland

July 17, 2015 by Jessie VoigtsLeave a Comment

Do you love the Harry Potter books and movies? If you want more Harry Potter in your life, consider traveling to the locations where the Harry Potter movies were filmed. The movies were shot in the UK - in Britain and Scotland. There are tours where you can travel to the places, but remember that many of the scenes were shot in a studio, or are composites of several locations. When we were in Scotland, we visited all three of the Scottish … [Read more...]

Illinois Improbable: A Story of Upending Expectations

July 5, 2015 by Richard Bangs2 Comments

When I was a high-school student in Bethesda, Maryland, and beginning to think about college, my parents sat me down and set a parameter: they would only allow a school within 1000 miles of our home, with the idea that I would be more likely to visit over holidays if within that range. My elder sister had already picked a school, Knox College, in Galesburg, Illinois, and now it was my turn. I pulled out a map, cut a string keyed to 1000 miles, … [Read more...]
