Deep in the Heart of Texas: A Traveller’s Guide

March 6, 2017 by Andrew Kahler2 Comments

Many Australians have a vague idea of what Texas, and Texans, are like. While it’s true that you will see your fair share of cowboy hats while visiting the state, there are a lot of things that might surprise you. Austin, Texas, for example, boasts a thriving cultural scene and is known as the live music capital of the world. If you love spacious and uncrowded natural parks, great live music, incredible Tex-Mex cuisine and fun theme parks, … [Read more...]

The New Wildcrafted Cuisine by Pascal Baudar

March 1, 2017 by DaveLeave a Comment

Author Pascal Baudar is a professional forager. But he is much more then this - he has spent the past 15+ years researching and investigating pretty much anything that grows or is found in the wild (native and non native plants) in Southern California that one can eat, or use in in food. His vast array of plant knowledge and their uses is truly remarkable (we have joined him on one of his private foraging sessions, highly recommended by the way … [Read more...]

Hitchhiking Through New Zealand

February 25, 2017 by John R6 Comments

I had just spent two weeks riding around the North and South Islands of New Zealand with close friends. We rented a car, bought a teepee, and spent our days checking out the gorgeous scenery and nights spent under the stars. We had a blast, but now my friends were gone. I was all alone. The time had come to finally start hitchhiking. New Zealand is notorious for hitchhiking. The country is filled with friendly people who are used to picking … [Read more...]

The Feel is in the Destination, Baros Maldives

February 6, 2017 by Dave4 Comments

Opening in 1973, the Baros Maldives was only the third island destination resort in the Maldives. It's gorgeous beauty and proximity to Male were among the primary reasons for it's opening. Even though such history is fairly recent - things were significantly different back then. There were no banks on Male, fishing was still the primary income source for the country, the population was less then a 1/3 of what it is today and on Baros the … [Read more...]

Surprised in a good way by Taipei

February 5, 2017 by Dave8 Comments

I have flown into Taipei many times over the years but never really explored the city or the surrounding countryside. For some reason I never had any interest in doing so. However, after spending 4 days in Taipei recently, I must admit that my perception of the city has changed dramatically. For those who have never been to this part of the world, Taiwan makes an excellent first choice/introduction to Asia. It is easy to get around and … [Read more...]

MGM National Harbor—Local Flavors, International Appeal

February 2, 2017 by Tom BentleyLeave a Comment

It may sound like a crock of balderdash to start out a review of a luxury resort with a statement about how happy the employees seem. Or that the property has transformed an area by emphasizing local hiring and local artists. But cross my heart, the service people weren’t smiling at Maryland’s MGM National Harbor resort because they were Westworld robots. And the place has such regional roots that the very clay from the property … [Read more...]
