Arequipa, Peru – More Information

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Banks are plentiful especially around the center of town and Plaza del Armas. Unlike most other cities, there are some banks in Arequipa that actually are open on Sundays! ATM machines are abundant in the center of town and are open 24/7. Taxi Drivers - in Arequipa do not use meters. You need to decide on a price before you get into the car. Typically trips around town will cost merely several soles. We used Alberto Loayza, a taxi driver … [Read more...]

Las Vegas, NV – Mt. Charleston

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Mount Charleston, (standing just above 11,900 feet) is Las Vegas' tallest nearby mountain and is covered with snow in the winter and offers a break from the heat in the summer. Merely 45-50 minutes from "the strip" this affords an easy day trip and a possible much needed escape from the glitz and glamour of the casino life. Take the 15 north of Las Vegas and exit at State Route 157. A good hike is the Fletcher Canyon Trail (about 2 miles). … [Read more...]

Las Vegas, NV – Red Rock Canyon

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Few people who visit Las Vegas actually make the trek out to Red Rock Canyon. This state park is located about 35 minutes west of Vegas proper - off of W. Charleston Blvd (route 159). Note that there may be signs off of the 15 freeway telling you to exit for Red Rock but there may not be any signs telling you to turn onto Charleston Blvd to get to Red Rock. With the urban sprawl making its way across the creosote covered high desert towards … [Read more...]

Visit Corvallis OR – August 2003

August 1, 2003 by DaveLeave a Comment

Corvallis, Oregon is a small college town of about 50,000 full time residents. Located only about a 90 minute drive south of Portland - in the western part of the state. Home to Oregon State University (the Beavers) - a college that produced the graduate who invented the mouse for the computer - also where Hewlett-Packard's inkjet printing process was developed. Geographically the town sits in the coastal foothills - and is surrounded by … [Read more...]

Morocco – Chefchaouen

by Dave · 1 Comment

According to several locals we met Chefchaouen is not the true Moroccan experience - they informed us that it has received too much influence from Spain. That said, having a Spanish influence does in no way detract from this town. This is somewhat of a tourist town - I was here during some far away war, viral outbreak or other scare and there were very few tourists present. Most of the locals I met were very welcoming and some were quite … [Read more...]

Bangkok, Thailand – Day Trips

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The following destinations range from half day to very long day trips from Bangkok. AYUTTHAYA used to be the largest and main city in Thailand before Bangkok. Its located about 90 minutes north of Bangkok by bus (via the Mo Chit bus station) or about 2 hours by train from the Hua Lampong train station in Bangkok. It is well worth seeing if you have a day. It takes most of the day to see this city when you count your travel and visiting … [Read more...]

While Catalina has one airport (Airport in the Sky), this airport is not setup for commercial service. Catalina, CA – Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Airport in the Sky One has to be creative when there is a not a lot of flat space on the island. Such was the case when building the runway for the Airport in the Sky - two mountaintops were flattened and then the resulting debris was pushed together to create a flat 3,000+ foot runway. Not open to commercial aircraft, the airport services private planes and handles the mail delivery for the island. Sometimes an old DC-3 World War II vintage … [Read more...]
