Reno, NV – Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

For a town of this size there are a fair number of attractions that are worth seeing. BaseCamp Reno is extremely unique; it is the world's tallest climbing wall (either indoor or outdoor) - in this case it is located outside on the east wall of the Whitney Peak Hotel (tall is a theme here - this hotel is appropriately named for the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states, Mt. Whitney - located in neighboring California). The climbing … [Read more...]

Reno, NV – Casinos

by Dave · Leave a Comment

For those serious gamblers, for those who perhaps just dabble in gambling, and for those who don't gamble but want to see the action - Reno offers a pleasing diversity of casinos. And most of these casinos feature a large hotel, often in a separate building from the casino (sometimes connected by walkways). The majority of the casinos feature doors that must be pushed open - and once you push through a second set of doors, you are deposited into … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico – Hotel Frances

by Dave · 2 Comments

We highlight this hotel on its own page within our Guadalajara guide because of its uniqueness as being the oldest hotel in the western hemisphere. Hotel Frances Guadalajara is located in the heart of Guadalajara's downtown historic district, within a short walk of Plaza Tapatia, address: Maestranza 35. Hotel Frances was founded in 1610; it was renovated and restored in the early 1980's. Priced reasonably with plenty of old world charm. During … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Real Goods Solar

by Dave · 3 Comments

Real Goods in Hopland is a solar educational center that was built in the mid 1990's. Their original history dates back to the 1970's; founder John Schaeffer started Real Goods in the town of Willits (and he actually sold the first solar panel in the United States). They are located at 13771 South Highway 101 on the east side of the road. You will see the signs for Real Goods as you drive up the 101. Real Goods suggests you donate $5/vehicle as … [Read more...]

Monterey, CA – Historical

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Monterey is rich in California heritage - many of these old buildings are well preserved. Most of these historical sites are within a short walk of the downtown area - and about a 15-20 minute walk from Fisherman's Wharf. Many of these sites are related to the government's influence in Monterey. Monterey used to be the capital of Alta California. An excellent history resource regarding Monterey is: www.montereyhistory.org   Colton … [Read more...]

Oaxaca, Mexico

by Dave · 6 Comments

We first visited the city of Oaxaca in December, during the dry season so some of our mentions in this article may be seasonally related. For example, some of the fruits we saw in the markets are only ripe during that time of year, and some of the festivals we experienced certainly only occur during December. Oaxaca (elevation 5,084 feet, population 265,000) is located in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The Oaxaca airport offers … [Read more...]

Palm Springs, CA – Tram Hike

by Dave · Leave a Comment

We have visited Palm Springs a number of times in January for the warm wintertime weather. The weather was what we had expected during the day each trip with temperatures in the high 70's and low 80's. In fact the town of Coachella (south of Palm Springs) recorded the nation's high temperature during one of our trips. We were staying with a group of 15 people in a time share condo. The condo was built against the base of a hill, and at night the … [Read more...]

Oaxaca, Mexico – Museums

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Museums in Oaxaca range from displays of treasure (the jewels of Monte Alban), to historical artifacts to wonderful artwork. We visited the following museums during our time in Oaxaca. Museo de Arte Contempraneo de Oaxaca (Contemporary Art Museum), is located inside Casa de Cortes at Alcala 202. This museum houses permanent displays of five famous Oaxacan artists including Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Gutierrez and Rodolfo Morales. The … [Read more...]

Oaxaca, Mexico – Churches

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Iglesia de Santa Domingo is truly an impressive building. It is located a few blocks north of the zocalo and easily noticed due to its impressive twin towers. This church was built between 1570 and the early part of the 17th century. It was the primary church used by Oaxaca's Dominican Monastery. Take a look at the incredibly thick walls. The building has survived many earthquakes - in the early 19th century it was even used as a stable. A … [Read more...]

Oaxaca, Mexico – Festivals

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Oaxacan Festivals are the most exciting times of the year in Oaxaca; many have religious significance. Participants in certain festivals will parade between churches in order to complete a variety of rituals. Others march around the zocalo wearing ornate costumes. December is a popular festival month but festivals are held at certain times throughout the year. Guelaguetza is perhaps the largest and most exciting Oaxacan festival. This … [Read more...]
