The Sealous in Africa by Robert J. Ross

August 1, 2016 by DaveLeave a Comment

This impressive and weighty book focuses on the Sealous region in southeastern Tanzania. The intimate collection of photography contained within is dominated by the diversity of wildlife that lives here. The Sealous is one of the largest 'still wild' areas left on the planet. It is a reserve where no people live and no permanent structures are permitted within it's borders. The photographs displayed within the book represent fours years of … [Read more...]

Part One: Introduction to Cuba

June 21, 2016 by Jessica Starkschall2 Comments

For the past 50+ years, the idea of traveling to Cuba on an American cruise line has been unfathomable. Then, in May of 2016, that idea became a reality – it became fathomable.  Justifiably so, the first cruise line granted access into Cuba’s mesmerizing culture is named Fathom. Fathom Impact + Travel, a subsidiary company of Carnival Cruise lines, was created in 2012 and been in business since 2014.  Fathom Impact + Travel is the answer to the … [Read more...]

Why Are Personal Trips Interesting?

May 31, 2016 by Alexey S3 Comments

If you are used to traveling in larger groups, it is time to consider an alternative type of travel; a private tour with a guide. With a private guide you can customize the type of tour you like including it's duration, route, mode of transport, and pace among other options. Consider this well-known image: a man with a flag or a sign in his raised hand leads a string of camera toting tourists. This is one way to see a city. However, your … [Read more...]

Holland celebrated their own King's birthday (Willem-Alexander) for the 3rd year in a row in April 2016. This fun event is known as "Koningsdag" or "King's Day" and is held on April 27, a national holiday in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Basecamp Ortelius, Ushuaia to Antarctica Cruise with Oceanwide Expeditions

April 4, 2016 by Dave5 Comments

Oceanwide Expeditions is a pioneer in cruise-based exploration of both Antarctica and the Arctic regions. Based in the Netherlands and with an office in Houston - their focus is on small ship Antarctica & Arctic cruise adventures to parts of the world that see relatively few visitors. Many of the staff on board have been with the company for years. In an environment where there is an extremely thin line for survival, safety is paramount; in … [Read more...]

The Cubans by Jay Seldin

April 1, 2016 by DaveLeave a Comment

Everything Cuba is on the tips of traveler's tongues from the states these days with the thawing of decades of strained relations. Photographer Jay Seldin's timely book of black and white photography documents an intimate look into the lives of Cubans. Cuba is cursorily known for vintage cars, futbol, older buildings, images of Castro and Che but his photographs in this book are exclusively of the Cuban people. They represent young and old; … [Read more...]

Notes from Basecamp Ortelius, Drake’s Passage

March 28, 2016 by DaveLeave a Comment

Upon boarding the Basecamp Ortelius in anticipation of our Antarctica cruise (the ice breaker ship we will be on for the next 13 days) I immediately noticed a few of the staff wearing shorts. Remarking to one of them that it is awfully cold for that kind of apparel, they quickly replied with, "if you think it is cold now, just wait until we get to Antarctica!" Nonetheless, the wind was bone chilling as we pulled out of lovely Ushuaia - the … [Read more...]

Upcoming Antarctica Trip, Ortelius Basecamp – Oceanwide Expeditions

February 16, 2016 by DaveLeave a Comment

Antarctica has been on my list of remote places to visit for years - I never have done so because of a variety of reasons, one has to cross the Drake Passage (supposedly one of the world's most treacherous waters - I get very bad sea sickness at times) and the cost of getting there - which as demand grows to visit the costs seem to have gone down (just a cursory observation). I randomly met Dan and Audrey of the travel site, Uncornered Market … [Read more...]
