Exploring the Diversity of Hawaii’s Big Island

May 28, 2010 by Dave2 Comments

We boarded the plane leaving for Kona behind a clean cut well-dressed businessman toting a RollAboard with a book tucked in tightly in the back. Only one word of the title showed, "sex" and this apparently caught the eye of a number of travelers as we heard hints of conversation and chuckles from behind us. But no one had the guts to actually ask this traveler for more details, juicy or otherwise. For those who know me, know the serious … [Read more...]

A Few Words about Madagascar

May 15, 2010 by Bernard PollackLeave a Comment

Sometimes it's good to be cautious--and other times it's better to go with your gut. People told us not to visit Madagascar, that political conflict made the country unsafe for tourists. But we decided to go anyway because if we had listened to those voices, we'd never have gone to Nairobi, Kampala, or Kigali. We are cautious when we travel, but aware that our best and most eye-opening experiences are places well off the beaten … [Read more...]

Ubud, Indonesia – March 2010

March 1, 2010 by Dave1 Comment

Ubud Indonesia Bali is a wonderful affordable arts driven town on Bali Island, Indonesia, well inland from the tourist crazy beach areas of Kuta and Legion. It takes about an hour and 20 minutes from Kuta Beach to Ubud. A plethora of home stays and guesthouses abound providing affordable accommodation. There are also some very nice intimate Balinese resorts for higher end lodging. A stay here is generally relaxed and not for the night club … [Read more...]

Spending Taca in Bata in Dhaka

October 1, 2009 by DaveLeave a Comment

Bata shoe stores are everywhere in Dhaka! Most people assume Bata is from "their home" country based on the companies' large International distribution. Desher's told us Bata is their own company, others said it is Canadian. In actuality Bata is based in Switzerland having been founded in 1894 in what is now the Czech Republic. The founder said, "Work collectively, and live individually" We made it safely back and are now in Thailand. What a … [Read more...]

Sundarbans Tour, Bangladesh

September 1, 2009 by Dave4 Comments

The following is a description of a 4 day 3 night guided tour to the Sundarbans in Southern Bangladesh. This trip was taken in January during the winter season (cooler with pleasant at times warm days and cooler nights, but not too cold). The Sundarbans are the world's largest Mangrove swamp with the majority of this swamp within Bangladesh while part of the swamp is in India. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main purpose for most … [Read more...]

Relaxing in Ubud, Bali

January 1, 2009 by Dave7 Comments

Recently we were in Bali for a week. We spent most of our time in the Ubud area and this article focuses on area attractions and information regarding this region. The closest International Airport is in Denpasar which is about 1 hour and 20 minutes from the town of Ubud. From the airport the cheapest way to get to Ubud is to take a taxi to the bus station in Legion/Kuta and from the station, a bus to the bus station in Ubud. Note that … [Read more...]

A Journey In The Gold Coast:In Ghana

July 10, 2008 by Junfil OlarteLeave a Comment

It was breezy late afternoon as I descended boarding EK 781 in the fertile soil of Ghana, a country in Western Africa. Indeed, it was my first visit to an entirely Black African nation with hospitable people. The uniqueness of humidity caught my attention next as we steered through traffic. Accompanied by my Ghanaian lawyer from the airport going to the place I was to stay. Ghana has a typical tropical climate: two rainy seasons in the … [Read more...]

A journey through time in Sabah

January 19, 2008 by Sandeesh MahedvanLeave a Comment

Sabah is part of East Malaysia, situated on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Administratively this island as a whole is divided between both Indonesia and the Kingdom of Brunei as well as Malaysia itself. Sabah occupies the northernmost tip of Borneo and its apt name alludes to local weather patterns! Translating to "land below the wind", Sabah's name is a reference to the nearby Philippines and the propensity for typhoons in that region. … [Read more...]
