May 27, 2012 by Paul Kandarian1 Comment

The late Rhode Island artist Maxwell Mays had long talked about giving the 300 acres he owned in that state's rural Coventry to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island upon his passing. Someone asked him why. Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge - cottage from across pond "I would like this land to stay open," he said. "I would like this land to breathe." He died in 2009, and gave the land that is now known as the Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge. … [Read more...]

Chatham Vineyards Virginia

May 9, 2012 by Allison TibaldiLeave a Comment

I recently ventured to Virginia to acquaint myself with this state's blossoming wine industry. Wine in Virginia has a venerable history, dating back to Jamestown and the ten vines that each settler was required to tend. Local boy Thomas Jefferson was on a life-long quest to produce a successful vineyard, and judging from my recent visit, he would be pleased with what today's producers are doing. There are nearly 200 wineries throughout the … [Read more...]

February 23, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

In the late 1990's a "kiwi" named Bottles was traveling overland through Africa and came across the Zambezi River. He never left. Today Bottles runs Jet Extreme, a totally self made business which caters to adventurers looking to experience the fast moving Zambezi River in an even faster way - on a jet boat. We rolled out in Bottles' canopy covered people mover - through the Mukuni Village where the well educated chief used to run marketing … [Read more...]

A man named Bottles and a dog named Egg

February 15, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

We were on the Zambezi River (Africa's 4th longest) for most of the day. First we headed out on Jet Extreme with the owner, Bottles. He set up shop on the Zambezi in the late 1990's after traveling overland through Africa. We passed through a spread out village - all the homes were made of earthen walls and thatched roofs. Electricity appeared to be non existent - just homes in the bush among the corn fields. Small children ran after our vehicle … [Read more...]
