Gibraltar: the end and the beginning

August 17, 2014 by Ian Packham2 Comments

My original plan for the end of my Encircle Africa expedition was to return to Gibraltar’s southernmost point, Europa Point, where I began. I liked the idea of looking back at Africa with renewed eyes. But all my reserves of energy were spent, and it was consolation enough to know that all that separated me from Africa was nine miles of often still water, after having travelled a distance equivalent to circumnavigating the earth at the … [Read more...]

Upon the 31-year-old aviatrix’s historic landing in Oakland, Calif., she will symbolically complete the unfinished 1937 flight of her namesake, Amelia Mary Earhart. Gold Mining and a Visit to Minelab’s Headquarters, Adelaide South Australia

June 18, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

One of my passions is gold prospecting, or as it is referred to in Australia, Fossicking. It is a healthy hobby as long as you don't get to obsessed with making money from it! I can remember going out with my father from a young age to explore some of his favorite mining terrain in the foothills of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains. With all the trips we have made I am fairly certain we have spent more time and money on logistics and equipment … [Read more...]

A Day of Diversity Exploring Los Angeles

June 2, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

Here is an example of a single day microcosm of the diversity of Los Angeles. In the morning we visited the oldest McDonald's still in operation on the planet (out of some 20,000 McDonald's worldwide!), located in Downey. It was built in 1953. The original McDonald's was founded in San Bernardino California in 1948 and was a barbecue restaurant serving over 100 different barbecue recipes. This particular restaurant was the third ever and has … [Read more...]

May 10, 2014 by Licelyn LabradorLeave a Comment

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller “Book a ticket now and just fly!” - this is what happened on 24th of May, year 2014, my friends and I decided to explore several islands of Cebu, Philippines. Benvenuti a casa carboni! You open their door and are warmly greeted by the owners of this fine establishment - either husband or wife Matteo or Fiona Carboni. If you happen to glance to your right you are also warmly greeted by glowing comments that prior guests have hand written on the wall after taking one of Matteo's culinary classes. And perhaps yet further still are the enticing aromas coming from the kitchen or possibly the freshly brewed … [Read more...]

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby

January 16, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

Imagine writing a book when your body is entirely paralyzed except for your left eye lid - the other eye being stitched shut. Author Bauby wrote this entire book by blinking - using a special alphabet that was devised for him - he chose each letter, one at a time slowly forming words, then sentences. Rendered almost entirely rigid by a stroke at age 43 in 1995, he left a world of fashion (he was editor of the French Elle) and entered a … [Read more...]
