October 11, 2013 by Julian H.Leave a Comment

The Isle of Wight is a tiny island off the south coast of England, but don’t let that fool you. It is full to the brim of history, culture and lots of things to see and do. Here are a few of the must do things for when you visit. Walk with the Animals If you fancy yourself as a bit of a Dr Dolittle, then the Isle of Wight is perfect for you. With the Owl and Monkey Haven, Seaview Wildlife Encounter, Isle of Wight Zoo and more, there is … [Read more...]

A Busy Day in LA

October 7, 2013 by Dave2 Comments

Got up early to go shopping at the relatively new Farmer's Market in front of the Autry Center - it is one of the smaller Farmer's markets in town but this time of year there is always good fresh fruit - especially grapes. Oh and the Homeboy Bakery is always there with their fresh bread (reformed gang members). Heading across the street - I spent 90 minutes at the LA Zoo - arriving right as they opened and raced to the back of the park to beat … [Read more...]

The Body Worlds Exhibition at Times Square Gets Under Your Skin and How!

I’m not a serial killer, I swear! No, that is not something a serial killer would say. I’m innocent, I swear! Okay, maybe that’s something a serial killer would say. But the point that I’m trying to make here is that (other than the fact that I’m not a serial killer) is that I’ve always had a morbid fascination with the insides of the human body. Err...okay, that sounded creepy. (I’m really not helping my case here, am I?!) Let me … [Read more...]

Boom & Bust: Authentic Old West Ghost Towns of Colorado

October 4, 2013 by Dave1 Comment

DENVER (Oct. 1, 2013) – Colorado is home to 150 recorded town sites and many more abandoned or ghost towns with storied pasts of mining riches, rowdy saloons and outlaw showdowns. Walk these main streets and imagine the former hustle and bustle of these towns in their heyday during Colorado’s mining boom frenzy in the late 1800s. Below is a sampling of some of Colorado’s best-preserved and most accessible ghost towns for modern-day visitors to … [Read more...]

Has Travel Come to This?

October 2, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

During a recent trip to South America my friends and I were joking about walking around sightseeing while taking distracted glances upwards from our phones. Some of us were addicted to our phones - jumping online when any free Wifi opportunity became available. I polled a family member currently on vacation in Croatia - who enjoys using his phone while traveling. I had a good laugh when we read this. "Travel is all about staying in touch … [Read more...]

8-year-old triplet boys, with parents, look up, down and all around

September 26, 2013 by Graham ShelbyLeave a Comment

CHICAGO — On our first afternoon in Chicago, my wife, my triplet sons and I set out in the face of a biting wind down Michigan Avenue. These eight-year-olds have never been to a city much bigger than Louisville, Kentucky, where we live. I worry that Chicago will scare or overwhelm them. If this trip goes badly, will Gabrielle and I have to reassure them that no, big cities aren't all bad? What version or vision of Chicago can I show these … [Read more...]

Exploring the Quito Surroundings

September 24, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

With a visit to the market yesterday evening - we were set for breakfast this morning. Cherimoya, Guanabana (soursop) and Granadilla (passion fruit) made for a delicious fruit based breakfast. The inside of a Granadilla looks like something from the guts of an alien - with black seeds surrounded by some goopy stuff encased in a white sack encased in the entire orange outside of the fruit. Never trust looks when it comes to fruit - sometimes you … [Read more...]

Exploring Quito

September 16, 2013 by Dave6 Comments

A young English teacher found us wandering the streets of Quito this morning. He was properly dressed - in suit and tie while bopping to tunes with his large earphones. He saw us struggling with a paper map and stopped to give us a hand. Eventually we found our way to a travel agency - made arrangements for the "avenue of volcanoes" tour - the spine of the country south of Quito which boasts some of the tallest volcanoes on the planet including … [Read more...]

Quick trip up to Vancouver

September 8, 2013 by Dave1 Comment

I had last visited Vancouver about 20 years ago - needless to say, I was long overdue for a visit to this cosmopolitan city. I remember all the cranes dotting the skyline last time I was here. While there are still plenty of cranes the skyline is now filled by many modern looking residential buildings. Like other Pacific Northwest cities, Vancouver does a good job of incorporating urban and rural. It is hard not to when you are surrounded by … [Read more...]
