Dublin at Christmas

November 29, 2013 by Simone Visser1 Comment

Dublin is a fabulous city to visit all year round but it is especially magical at Christmas. Every street, from the wide thoroughfares to the little winding alleys are lit for the season and the shops – always a delight – really rise to the occasion. For a very special Christmas break, Dublin is hard to beat and you can find an assortment of hotels on offer from Hotel Direct. Dublin’s markets are famous and at Christmas they are where you will … [Read more...]

Pinterest New Features, Announcement Party at Headquarters

November 23, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

Recently I had the opportunity to pre-test out a number of new features for Pinterest before their release in late November. The "place pins" are the highlight of these features - now you can add pins directly to a specific location on an interactive map and at the same time see who else has pinned that particular location. This is sure to be popular with travelers - you can catalog trips this way and now easily send individual boards to an … [Read more...]

My Winter Wish List for the Holidays

November 12, 2013 by Dave8 Comments

As the weather cools, travel heats up this time of year- visits to friends and family during the holidays, local trips to experience outdoor activities or destination trips to warmer locales certainly sounds appealing - especially as I write this - huddled next to a space heater. The warmth of this heater is making me reflect upon warm weather destinations that I visited earlier this year; Bermuda (an easy flight from the East Coast), Sydney, … [Read more...]

Lassen Trip, California

November 10, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

A friend of mine looked at YouTube the other day and found fishing videos of Hat Creek (located near Lassen National Park in Northern California). He had not been to Lassen in over 40 years - "Lets go fishing there", he told me. We hurriedly threw a bunch of gear in the back of his pickup - I can travel the world for a year with a school size backpack, but for 3 days in the woods - we had enough gear to hold a small garage sale if we had … [Read more...]

LACOT Meetup, Luxe Hotel, Los Angeles

October 27, 2013 by Dave2 Comments

I made the mistake of trying to go south towards the Sawtelle district (craving Ramen) around 5pm on a weekday. Barrington was backed up as far as I could see in the northbound direction - after turning around at some point, it took me 30 minutes to go 1/3 of a mile on surface streets and then on Sunset before pulling into the Luxe Hotel entance. Traffic is so intense in this part of town (combined with the major 405 construction project … [Read more...]

The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, Hottest Chili in the World

October 17, 2013 by Dave5 Comments

The Trinidad Scorpion is currently the hottest known Chili pepper on the planet. It is native to the Moruga district on the tiny island nation of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. I acquired a few seeds earlier this year. I saw references online from those cutting up a number of these particular peppers indicating they wore latex gloves. The potency of these peppers was such that they wore through these gloves! I finally picked my first … [Read more...]

Try Something New: Activities in Cyprus

October 15, 2013 by Nikolai RLeave a Comment

Cyprus has become a popular holiday destination largely due to its idyllic beaches and reputation as a family friendly and fun island. There is so much more to Cyprus than just sand, sea and sun though, and a holiday here can be packed full of interesting and exciting activities that can be enjoyed if you are the kind of person that needs a little more than relaxation by the waves. Try your hand at some new things whilst on a Direct Holidays trip … [Read more...]

IMPROV-ing it in Hollywood

October 11, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

Driving through Hollywood numerous times I've always wondered what it would be like to stand in one of these "sidewalk lines" late at night. Lines for nightclubs, lines for dark signless establishments with tough looking large people in front, lines for comedy shows, lines for Improv and lines for bars. I was standing in one of such lines this evening - in front of the Upright Citizens Brigade waiting to see the Swarm, 4 gentleman who perform … [Read more...]

Fun in the Sun in Bulgaria

October 7, 2013 by Nikolai Rudenko3 Comments

Packed with culture, heritage and beautiful scenery, Bulgaria is a holiday destination that's fast becoming the next big thing in the summer holiday brochure - and it's not hard to see why. Its beautiful coastline boasts miles of Blue Flag beaches, many of which feature bubbly holiday resorts, gorgeous golden sands and lovely warm shallow waters. There are plenty of family-friendly areas along Bulgaria's coastline, many of which offer … [Read more...]

A Busy Day in LA

October 7, 2013 by Dave2 Comments

Got up early to go shopping at the relatively new Farmer's Market in front of the Autry Center - it is one of the smaller Farmer's markets in town but this time of year there is always good fresh fruit - especially grapes. Oh and the Homeboy Bakery is always there with their fresh bread (reformed gang members). Heading across the street - I spent 90 minutes at the LA Zoo - arriving right as they opened and raced to the back of the park to beat … [Read more...]
