Adventure on the River: West Virginia Whitewater

September 8, 2019 by Amber MacPherson1 Comment

It was July 4th at the New River Gorge in West Virginia. It was dark, and I was on the roof of a truck clinging to the roof rack as we wound through the twisting back roads en route to the edge of the gorge. This had not been the plan. We had ended up loading the truck down with a couple of kegs and as many raft guides as we could fit after the trailer that was supposed to deliver us to the party developed a flat tire. We had unhitched it and … [Read more...]

Pissing on Snakes: a Postcard from Georgia; the Country on the Fringes of Europe

September 5, 2019 by EloquentlyLeave a Comment

Too vast. My eyes have nothing to rest on, sliding over rolling landscapes. With no point to hold my gaze, I’m afraid of tripping over the horizon. The road doesn’t look like it was designed to lead anywhere but merely to serve as a metaphorical symbol of the journey into the unknown. There isn’t much to know in the unknown, it seems. It looks unfinished and bare. Only in places the ground is covered with withered grasses, sometimes leafless … [Read more...]

All Aboard the Australia Bandwagon

September 2, 2019 by Beth SeagerLeave a Comment

Sitting on a 17-hour flight I felt like an ungrateful child.  I had the opportunity to take an amazing trip halfway around the world. UK office blocks are full to the dropped-ceilings with dreams of Down Under. Australia had just never been on The List. My husband and I were visiting friends who had fallen in love with Sydney and emigrated.  I assumed it would be very similar to the UK, and when we landed, it was.  Everything is in English, … [Read more...]

Mumbai- An Irresistibly Fascinating City

August 27, 2019 by Bhakti Luhar2 Comments

According to me, words fall short to praise the Mumbai city popularly known as the “City of Dreams” in India. Previously known as Bombay, it is a city that never sleeps which is absolutely true. This mesmerizing city offers a blend of the ultramodern architecture, historical monuments, beaches, hills and a lot more. Mumbai is also the powerhouse of Indian business, industry, trade, financial and entertainment capital of India. A perfect mix of … [Read more...]

Sweet Treats In Omaha, Nebraska

August 24, 2019 by Allison Tibaldi2 Comments

Nebraska is the heart of cattle country, best known for its meat, not its sweets.  In Omaha, the sugar fairy has blessed the state’s largest city with a cluster of shops selling tempting confections that will make you forget all about the beef. Those in the know leave their diet at the state border. Old Market Candy Shop For a taste of yesteryear, Old Market Candy Shop sells mouth-watering treats. Try the chicken feet, pretzel rods dunked … [Read more...]

8 Great Mountain Towns in the Great State of Georgia

August 22, 2019 by Angela Dowdy2 Comments

A most convivial convergence exists in the northeastern corner of Georgia; the Blue Ridge Mountains meet the Chattahoochee National Forest and the southern tip of the Appalachian Trail.  In this region,   mountains meet lakes, ruggedness meets charm, and quaintness meets culture.  I have picked eight favorite amazing towns (here in alphabetical order), which I hope to be visiting again and again. BLAIRSVILLE is an easily affordable place to … [Read more...]

Misadventures of a Gringo in Colombia

August 19, 2019 by Dusty and Sparky2 Comments

Upon leaving the unexpectedly small Cartagena airport, I was welcomed by a huge billboard featuring a Colombian Elvis impersonator. The other passengers who had also just arrived were poppin’ into little yellow micro-machine cabs and spinning off into their own assorted narratives. I stood and watched their numbers dwindle. Soon I was one of only a few prey left for the desperate transportation peddlers. A husky, determined Colombian man … [Read more...]

On Christmas Decorations and Syrian Food

August 17, 2019 by Sara Julia SmithLeave a Comment

The air was unusually clear for Cairo, a city notorious for its polluted, hazy skies. Perhaps it was only because it was my first time seeing all the Christmas decorations set up for the bazaar that it felt like a crisp winter day. The bazaar was an opportunity for refugee women to showcase their skills and talents. Many of them were selling handicrafts, and others were dishing up food from their home countries. The smells mingled throughout … [Read more...]

5 Most Amazing Casinos in the World

August 14, 2019 by Sherry WoodsLeave a Comment

There are two places in the world that claim the honor for hosting the most amazing casinos in the world; Las Vegas and Macau. Both are exclusive gambling destinations for tourists and compete in glamour and extravaganza. Casinos these days are not standalone structures, they are part of huge resorts that offer a myriad of services. While Macau attracts with designs and constructions of disproportionate size, Las Vegas invites to celebrity … [Read more...]

Cheesecake in the Vineyard

August 12, 2019 by Wendy VanHattenLeave a Comment

To say food inspired me on a trip to Italy sounds trite and a little too rehearsed. After all, there are lots of people who have been inspired by Italian food. Right? I’m telling you...this was different. Maybe it was because this was our first trip to Italy. Or, maybe it was because it was before GPS, and we had to rely on maps, road signs, and our basic sense of direction to get to our food. Some meals were more of an adventure than … [Read more...]
