Oklahoma City: An Overlooked Gem for Tourists?

April 25, 2026 by Sally ArnoldLeave a Comment

Let’s face it, Oklahoma City is perhaps not at the top of many people’s bucket lists of places to travel in the United States. Those lists are usually dominated by the big cities – LA, NYC, Chicago, Miami – or places with a unique party vibe – New Orleans, Vegas – or places of natural beauty – Grand Canyon, Yosemite.

Oklahoma City is none of those things, yet it offers tourists a unique experience, blending Native American heritage, Western “cowboy” culture and a forward-looking modernity that some may find surprising. It has become much more cosmopolitan in its demographics.

While recognizing that it might feel a little off-grid for international travelers, it’s well worth a visit. OKC has the big city feel without the bustle. Indeed, that’s roughly the tagline that the city’s tourist boards use to promote it. But what can you do there? What’s worth visiting? Let’s have a look at some things to experience in one of America’s overlooked cities:

Visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum

This is the city’s most important and influential landmark. The outdoor memorial is open year-round, while the museum tells the story of the infamous and horrific 1995 bombing in a thoughtful, powerful way. It is the kind of place that gives real context to Oklahoma City and leaves a lasting impression. The museum’s current hours are Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m., with the outdoor memorial open 24 hours a day.

See the Best Team in the NBA at the Paycom Center

The Oklahoma City Thunder NBA team is on fire right now. The team is the reigning NBA champion and contains, among other superstars, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning MVP and the favorite in the NBA betting for MVP this season. There’s a massive buzz around the city when OKC plays in the Paycom Center, reaching fever pitch right now as we move through the 2025/26 NBA Playoffs. Of course, be aware that the NBA season runs from October through to June, so you’ll be out of luck if you are visiting in high summer.

Explore Bricktown and Take a Water Taxi

Bricktown is one of the best areas for first-time visitors because it is easy, lively and built for wandering. The canal, restaurants, bars and entertainment spots make it a natural place to spend an afternoon or evening. A Bricktown Water Taxi tour is especially good for getting your bearings in a city that can feel a little larger than it is in reality.

Spend a Few Hours at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum

If you want one museum that feels distinctly Oklahoma, this is probably the one to pick. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is one of the city’s signature attractions and presents Western history, art and culture on a large scale. Current general admission is listed at $25 for adults, but it is well worth it. It’s arguably one of the most unique museums in America. Brilliant if you love Westerns.

Unwind at Scissortail Park

For a more relaxed side of the city, Scissortail Park is a great pick, especially if the weather is on point. It’s full of nice walks, lakes, concert stands and plenty of other amenities. It is, in fact, just one of 170 parks in the city. It really does put an emphasis on green spaces, which ties into the feeling that you are not in an oppressive metropolis.

Go to the Oklahoma City Zoo

The zoo is one of the city’s strongest family-friendly options, but it is not only for kids. It is a major attraction with interactive experiences and seasonal events. The official site currently lists daytime hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Standard admission is listed at $20 for adults, with last entry at 4 p.m. Note that it can get really busy during peak periods and holidays.
