Bedtime Prayers – The Pilgrim’s Guide to Hotels in Jerusalem

January 7, 2015 by Spencer Ho1 Comment

Jerusalem is a vibrant modern city full of cultural events, restaurants, and a rich nightlife. But it is first and foremost a spiritual center of the Jewish people. Jews from all over the world come to Jerusalem. They take part in pilgrimages to holy sites, such as the Western Wall and Temple Mount. Often, they also celebrate bar and bat mitzvahs (coming of age ceremonies), weddings, and Jewish holidays in their ancestral homeland. Because … [Read more...]

Bahrain, A Diversity of Experiences on a Tiny Island

January 3, 2015 by Dave3 Comments

Today I headed out to explore the island with my driver Babu. Babu, like many expats who have come to Bahrain is from India - and came here to take part in the construction boom a number of years ago. He worked his way to supervisor - the boom ended and now works with the hotel I am staying at to drive people around the island. He asked me how difficult it was to get a visa to the USA. I had to tell him for a single man like himself, it could be … [Read more...]

Coming Home to Hocking Hills, Ohio

January 3, 2015 by Marianne RuaneLeave a Comment

We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time. -- T.S. Eliot The press trip to Hocking Hills, Ohio, that I was invited to sounded like just my kind of quirky fun – visits to a washboard factory and the world’s only pencil sharpener museum, candle and pottery-making classes, off-road Segway and zipline rides, and hikes - including a haunted one … [Read more...]

This sizable photo epic by acclaimed author and photographer Rick Smolan details a 1,700 mile trek from Alice Springs (interior Australia) to the ocean along the shores of Western Australia made by Australian Robyn Davidson in 1977. This trek was made mostly solo but with several camels and her dog and at one point an Aboriginal man. "Tracks", a movie about this epic journey was released in 2013. Romanian Castles – January 2015

January 1, 2015 by Dave3 Comments

For a beautiful escape from Bucharest, especially in the heat of summer - drive about 2.5 hours to Transylvania - up in the Carpathian mountains and spend some time enjoying and touring Peles Castle. The castle built to be a summer residence and was inaugurated in 1883. It was home to the King and Queen of Romania - eventually it was closed during the Communist period - but reopened in 1990. Touchdown at Sunset, Lets go Explore Manama, Bahrain

December 27, 2014 by Dave2 Comments

I touched down gently at the Manama airport just prior to sunset after making several short regional flights, glad to have arrived to some warm and humid weather after rain and cold temps came to California the prior week. The last time I was in this area it was 47 degrees when I landed, sometime in September. The heat can be brutal in the summer here but by this time of year the temperatures have subsided considerably. I soon found myself … [Read more...]

A Crazy Day of Dune Bashing in Southern Qatar

December 21, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

I knew our drive out from Doha was going to be interesting as soon as we started our journey to the sand dunes from my hotel. Our driver, a large Omani soon crossed to the other lane of traffic and stunned an opposing driver by doing so. He had one hand on the wheel, one hand on his mobile and his eyes were looking somewhere else. Once he got off the phone he became quite liberal with the use of the horn and headlights - using both many times … [Read more...]

Exploring Vienna the Best Way, by Bicycle!

December 20, 2014 by Dave2 Comments

Arriving in Vienna was a shock after the calm and small town feel of Bratislava we have enjoyed the past few days. We were deposited right in the Museum District - which is a busy section of the city filled with massive and imposing historical buildings in all directions. Vienna has so much to see that we quickly decided trying to see some of its impressive architectural offerings on foot was not a good idea. We have been here several times on … [Read more...]
