The new Helsinki City Strategy “A Helsinki we can be proud of” outlines the city’s vision for the years 2025–2029. It presents Helsinki as a vibrant, sustainable, and open city that invests in culture, education, wellbeing, and equality. As the capital of the world’s happiest country, Finland, Helsinki strives to ensure that every child can learn, dream and reach their full potential. Helsinki’s appeal as an international travel destination is strengthened by its maritime character, world-class education system and the upcoming Museum of Architecture and Design, all reflecting the city’s vision of a good life, creativity and sustainable growth.
Maritime Helsinki attracts visitors
Helsinki’s seaside location and archipelago make the city truly unique among European capitals. Surrounded by the sea, Helsinki is developing into an open and accessible maritime city where residents and visitors alike can enjoy the islands, beaches, and sea routes offering both services and nature experiences
“Helsinki welcomes tourists from all over the world to experience our beautiful capital. Helsinki offers unique experiences such as our maritime destinations, vibrant culture scene and interesting events. We are determined to develop Helsinki to be an even better destination and home for residents, tourists and businesses ,” says Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov.
New Museum of Architecture and Design – a future cultural landmark
Opening in 2030 at Makasiiniranta by the South Harbour, the new Museum of Architecture and Design, designed by JKMM Architects, will bring together the best of Finnish architecture and design under one roof for the first time. The museum will strengthen Helsinki’s role as a design and cultural capital and serve as a lively meeting place with exhibitions, events, a design library and a sea-view terrace.
Helsinki – a pioneer in sustainable tourism
As the capital of the world’s happiest country, Helsinki’s global reputation continues to grow, attracting record visitor numbers in 2025. The city is positioning itself as a pioneer in sustainable tourism. Ranked as the top in the Global Destination Sustainability Index and the first large city to earn the Green Destinations GSTC certification, Helsinki continues to invest in sustainable, regenerative and year-round tourism experiences.
A city of equality, education and good life
In Helsinki, every child has equal opportunities to learn and dream. A good life is built on equality, quality education and smooth everyday life.
“Helsinki is a city where you can live your own individually meaningful life and live to your full potential. We are determined to uphold the best possible education, healthcare and kindergartens for everyone in Helsinki,” says Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov.
Urban development shaped by modern architecture, green areas and a strong sense of community
Helsinki is developing new urban areas that combine high-quality architecture, access to nature and vibrant communities. The transformation of the former Hanasaari power plant into a mixed-use district, along with projects like the Suvilahti Event Hub, Tukkutori Wholesale Market and the Helsinki Prison area, reflects this vision. New districts such as Kalasatama, Jätkäsaari and Kruunuvuorenranta are opening up to residents and visitors alike.
The city continues to invest in sustainable transport, green spaces and the A More Beautiful Helsinki programme to ensure high architectural standards, sustainability and a pleasant urban environment for all.
