A Week in Sunny Devon

February 1, 2006 by Michael LevyLeave a Comment

devon ireland england

It was six forty-five in the morning as our USA plane touched down at Gatwick airport. This was the start of my one weeks vacation in Southern England. As we drew up to the disembarkation gate the captain told us the weather forecast for the next few days was warm and sunny ... what a bonus no rain. Once we cleared customs and located our hire car which, as luck would have it, had a diesel engine. What a great reward, considering gas is around … [Read more...]

Huaraz, Peru – Restaurants

by Dave · 1 Comment

Dave has eaten at all of the restaurants listed below. More restaurants will be added here during future climbing trips. Cafe Turmanye is owned by Finnish and Spanish missionaries with proceeds from the cafe funding local missionary work. This cafe opened in early summer 2008. Several couches make this a nice place to relax during your breakfast and lunch. Good fruit juices and simple food items. This cafe is just down the hill on the left … [Read more...]

Death Valley, CA – When to Visit

by Dave · Leave a Comment

If you enjoy extreme high temperatures visit Death Valley in the middle of July, as historically that is the hottest time of the year. However the most comfortable time of the year to visit is in early Spring, like March and the first or second week in April. During these months the high temperature is often in the 70's and 80's. Fall can also be a nice time to visit but the high temperatures in September and October are a bit warmer averaging in … [Read more...]

Death Valley, CA – Attractions

by Dave · 1 Comment

Death Valley is the largest national park in the lower 48 states; it houses a diversity of natural and human-made attractions. Based on numerous trips to Death Valley, we recommend at least 4-5 days to have enough time to visit some of the following highlights. However some schedules may not allow that amount of time: One day: we recommend you concentrate your sightseeing efforts near Furnace Creek as many natural attractions are located … [Read more...]

Death Valley, CA – Accomodation

by Dave · Leave a Comment

CAMPING Death Valley National Park features a variety of campgrounds, some quite large like the 1000+ Sunset campground near Furnace creek (only open in the winter months), to just a few camp spaces. Many campgrounds close for the summer season - approximately mid April through mid October. For the campgrounds that do stay open in the summer months, often the prices will be cheaper. We have often found campgrounds closed in the park due to … [Read more...]

Iquitos, Peru

by Dave · 2 Comments

Iquitos, Peru is the largest city in the world not connected to other cities by roads. It is located in eastern Peru deep in the heart of the Amazonian rainforest - next to the great Amazon river. The only way to reach Iquitos is by plane (which is the fastest and most direct), or by a boat up from Brazil along the Amazon river, or by bus and then boat if one is coming from western Peru. The Amazon river supplies nearly one quarter of the … [Read more...]

New Zealand, South Island – Glaciers

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Franz Josef and Fox are the two primary glaciers located on the west coast of the South Island. Visitors who arrive on a rainy day won't really begin to see the beauty and extent of their coverage - both are among the fastest moving glaciers in the world and their footprint is constantly changing from year to year. Glaciers in Argentina and other parts of southern South America are similar to those in New Zealand in that these are the only places … [Read more...]

New Zealand, South Island – Queenstown

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Queenstown is the hub of outdoor activities on the South Island - IE the outdoor capital of New Zealand, especially in the summertime. The activities are seemingly endless! These include bungee jumping (A.J. Hackett founded the world's first commercial bungy jumping company in New Zealand) paragliding, hang gliding, zip lining, helicopter tours and jet boating. This area of New Zealand has been compared to the resort area of Lake Tahoe in … [Read more...]

Iquitos, Peru – Attractions

We have visited or participated in the following attractions or experiences in Iquitos or the surrounding region. Amazon River - what can you say about the Amazon River except its the world's greatest river. Its mind boggling to think that it supplies nearly a quarter of all the world's freshwater! From the Atlantic Ocean in Brasil, vessels make the entire trip up the Amazon River to Iquitos (some 3,600 kilometers of navigable waterway). It … [Read more...]

The San Jose Flea Market, CA – October 2004

October 1, 2004 by DaveLeave a Comment

This huge flea market was founded in 1960 and advertises over 8 miles of vendors. This market is located on Berryessa Road about 1.5 miles in from the 101 freeway in San Jose and is open Wednesday, Friday and the weekends. There are several huge parking lots all located approximately across from the actual flea market. If you visit on the weekends expect to walk 5-10 minutes to the main entrance due to the crowds. Be sure to visit their 1/4 … [Read more...]
