Maho Beach, Sint Maarten – October 2016

October 1, 2016 by Dave2 Comments

This tiny sliver of sand is located at one end of the runways at Princess Juliana Airport. Considered on it's own it would be another fine example of Caribbean turquoise waters framed by smooth sand. But based on it's unique location to this airport, it has become somewhat legendary in the circles of plane spotters. And the reason for this is one can stand directly on the beach and look up in awe at jets passing extremely close overhead (often … [Read more...]

Lets Go Climbing – Where Are We?!

September 26, 2016 by Dave2 Comments

"Do not start climbing over there - that seal is in the way". Were we mountain climbing or clambering over cliffs at some sunny beach in California somewhere? I've done a bit of mountain climbing around the world but have never heard a seal referenced as we are about to start a climb! The reason for this, is we are mountaineering in Antarctica as part of an Oceanwide Expedition Antarctica cruise. Climbing here is surreal - the amount of ice … [Read more...]

How I Had a 5D4N Budget Vacation in Singapore for P7200 (RM 620)

September 23, 2016 by Jose Carlo2 Comments

So I've just grabbed a three days off from my work here in Malaysia and was wondering where to go to? Since I have limited resources, I've selected the two countries accessible by bus transport from Malaysia - Thailand and Singapore. With time consideration, I heard from a local colleague that a bus ride to Thailand will take me 8 hours to Hatyai (but not yet Bangkok - only on the border of Malaysia-Thailand) and only 4 hours to … [Read more...]

Nine Reasons to Visit the Azores Now

September 7, 2016 by Jaime Scilingo Mazur15 Comments

Name the group of nine European islands merely four-and-a-half hours from Boston Logan Airport. Stumped? You are not alone.  Most of America has never heard of the Azores, couldn't locate them on a map, and wouldn't know what part of Europe claims them as countrymen.  For the few who do know of the Atlantic eden 900 miles west of Portugal, this Zion is a cherished gift and a dichotomous burden.  On one hand, the beauty and virginal nature of the … [Read more...]

Visit Antarctica – September 2016

September 1, 2016 by Dave2 Comments

Antarctica is a unique experience. Natives have never called this continent home and the land is not owned by any one country. A visit here can be life changing; the experiences are truly unique and so is the visually stunning scenery. Very few people live here year round - they are in some of the bases operated by various countries around the continent. One tour operator, Oceanwide Expeditions offers several trips a year to Antarctica. Their … [Read more...]

Part Three: Sweet, Sweet Santiago de Cuba

August 24, 2016 by Jessica Starkschall2 Comments

In between our two ports of call, Havana and Santiago de Cuba, we had another day at sea. This is a great opportunity for passengers to relax and reinvigorate for the next port.  We participated in an Introduction to Santiago de Cuba seminar.  While I didn’t learn that much about the city, I realized there would be plenty of that the following day in Santiago de Cuba, and instead we simply got an overview of what to expect from the day ahead.  … [Read more...]

A 3-Day Itinerary on Kangaroo Island, South Australia

August 16, 2016 by Patricia Pagenel2 Comments

We started our 3-week stay in Australia with 3 days on Kangaroo Island. The appeal of Australia was without surprise its rich and unique wildlife. Kangaroo Island seems to encompass many of what we looked for. Why Kangaroo Island? The third largest island in Australia with 155 km long and 55 km wide (96 miles by 34 miles), Kangaroo Island is not on the tourist trail and has stayed untouched from the big tourism. Indeed, a third of the island … [Read more...]

A Few Notes about Basecamp Ortelius, Oceanwide Expeditions Antarctica Trip

August 10, 2016 by DaveLeave a Comment

What an incredible trip so far. Tonight we enjoyed a BBQ in a snowstorm on the helicopter deck on the "H", where the helicopter lands. Large ribs, chicken, and steaks were all being grilled. Every meal we have significant appetites because we are exercising so much during the day. We passed through the *amazing* and very narrow Lemaire Channel yesterday - with massive and jagged mountains providing the visuals on both sides as our ship broke … [Read more...]

Four Unusual Travel Destinations Adventurer Horace Ashton Loved

August 8, 2016 by Libby AtwaterLeave a Comment

Horace Dade Ashton began exploring the world as a teenage cabin boy in the late nineteenth century. His love of the sea and the open ocean led him to explore many parts of the world when travel was difficult. He wrote about his travels, and I’m delighted to present excerpts from them to fellow adventurers. by Libby J. Atwater, coauthor of The Spirit of Villarosa and author of a What Lies Within HAITI Intrigued by what anthropologist … [Read more...]
