Mt. Lassen National Park is located in northern California north east of Red Bluff and south east of Redding. Lassen is about a 4 hour drive from Sacramento and about a 1 hour drive from Red Bluff. Highway 89 bisects the park and is the same road that winds along the spine of the northern Sierras all the way down to Lake Tahoe. Pinecrest Lake is located on Highway 108. This road is closed in the winter past the small town of Strawberry, but it is open to Pinecrest and Dodge Ridge Ski resort. The towns of Sugar Pine, Confidence, Mi-Wuk Village, Sierra Village, Long Barn are all south west of Pinecrest Lake on Highway 108. Pinecrest Lake is located at about 5,600 feet. Kalispell is located in the Flathead Valley between the West Glacier entrance and Big Flathead Lake. The city has a population of 23,000 and is located on Montana's most dangerous road, the 93 Highway. In fact no sooner had I left Kalispell, I ran into slow traffic. Lake Tahoe, The Lake, is the jewel of the Sierra Nevada's. At 6,226 feet above sea level Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. It is 12 miles wide, and 22 miles long. The Lake has a surface area of 191.6 square miles. The average depth of The Lake is 989 feet, while its deepest point is 1,645 feet. This is the third deepest lake in North America. The sun shines at Lake Tahoe about 67 percent of the year or 252 days. In the winter there are heavy periods of snowfall, but the rest of the year is relatively dry. John C. Fremont was the first explorer to see Lake Tahoe. He "discovered" it in 1844. For many centuries before Fremont came the Lake Tahoe Basin was a summer home for bands of Washoe Indians. Lake Tahoe had spiritual meaning for these Indians and they held sacred ceremonies along the shore line.
