A Day of Diversity Exploring Los Angeles

June 2, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

Here is an example of a single day microcosm of the diversity of Los Angeles. In the morning we visited the oldest McDonald's still in operation on the planet (out of some 20,000 McDonald's worldwide!), located in Downey. It was built in 1953. The original McDonald's was founded in San Bernardino California in 1948 and was a barbecue restaurant serving over 100 different barbecue recipes. This particular restaurant was the third ever and has … [Read more...]

Cebu Will Always Be A Paradise!

May 10, 2014 by Licelyn LabradorLeave a Comment

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller “Book a ticket now and just fly!” - this is what happened on 24th of May, year 2014, my friends and I decided to explore several islands of Cebu, Philippines. Plane ticket booked. Next in line: Do the research. My little knowledge about the place gave me the enthusiasm to go online and start moving my fingers on my laptop keyboard for my research. What is the … [Read more...]

Benvenuti a casa carboni! You open their door and are warmly greeted by the owners of this fine establishment - either husband or wife Matteo or Fiona Carboni. If you happen to glance to your right you are also warmly greeted by glowing comments that prior guests have hand written on the wall after taking one of Matteo's culinary classes. And perhaps yet further still are the enticing aromas coming from the kitchen or possibly the freshly brewed … [Read more...]

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby

January 16, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

Imagine writing a book when your body is entirely paralyzed except for your left eye lid - the other eye being stitched shut. Author Bauby wrote this entire book by blinking - using a special alphabet that was devised for him - he chose each letter, one at a time slowly forming words, then sentences. Rendered almost entirely rigid by a stroke at age 43 in 1995, he left a world of fashion (he was editor of the French Elle) and entered a … [Read more...]

This Holiday, Send Your Loved Ones Away

December 5, 2013 by Dave4 Comments

As a huge fan of traveling, I think there’s never a wrong time for travel-themed gifts. But the circle I buy for at this time of year falls into two distinct groups: those who always travel, and those who never do. And this presents a problem. The ones who do it a lot have such a practiced routine that they’re reluctant to disrupt it by trying something new. And the ones who never leave their own zip code are often baffled by the process of … [Read more...]
