Nightless nights in the Land of the Midnight Sun

August 10, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

Summer is finally here and there’s nowhere better to make the most of the warmer weather and longer days than in Finland – the Land of the Midnight Sun. The most iconic of Finnish phenomena, also known as the nightless night or polar day, the Midnight Sun sets Finland apart from any other summer holiday destination, where almost endless summer days mean that there’s twice as much fun to be had in the open air. When nights are almost as light … [Read more...]

Wonders of Nature in France

August 9, 2014 by Donna MelangeLeave a Comment

Have you watched Mary Poppins? As a child, during the holidays, I would watch this movie numerous times until the video tape broke. The best part of the musical was when the birds sang when one perched on Mary’s finger. I thought that was amazing and hoped that one day, I too would sing with a bird, or at least get a bird to come close to me enough to perch on my hand. Travelling is always a joy and full of unexpected surprises.  On a sunny … [Read more...]

The land of the rolling hills

August 7, 2014 by Paramita Maitra1 Comment

A city and corporate life makes me wither away hence the scent of any travel trail hits me head-on soaring my spirits. A recent tour of the land of the rolling hills - Cameron Highlands - nestled in Pahang, Malaysia brought me closer to nature much like a lovelorn lass. Tea gardens and trek have always lulled my senses. Back home the Himalayan foothills resonate the same aura as Cameron Highlands although the landscape of the former is more … [Read more...]

A Nicaraguan Pirate Story

July 31, 2014 by Louise Lakier1 Comment

Chapter I: The Introduction He filled the doorway and peered down at me with eyes the color of the deep blue sea. “You must be Louise” he said, “Come in”. The familiarity startled me a little. It had been one of those weeks where the city water was on for just a few hours a day. Bathing was barely an option. Doing laundry was not. Nothing was clean. Black board shorts and a matching tank top would have to do. The two bus, one van, and one … [Read more...]

Dining on Vancouver Island

July 27, 2014 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

John M. Edwards, the only smoker ever allowed onto the premises of snooty “Sooke Harbour House,” visits Vancouver Island in the Pacific Northwest on his own terms. As a paying contributor to “The United Negroe College Fund,” for sage reasons of philanthropy as well as tax evasion, I was a little surprised to find in the maritime city of Vancouver, British Columbia, absolutely no black people—only Commonwealthy Europeans and Asians, plus a few … [Read more...]

Where is Amelia Earhart’s Plane? Colin Cobb Knows…

July 20, 2014 by Richard Bangs2 Comments

“Never interrupt someone doing something you said couldn’t be done.” -Amelia Earhart Check out the video at the end to solve the mystery." A couple years ago while visiting Belfast I took a Titanic walking tour, run by a charismatic chap, Colin Cobb. He took me to the edge of the 880 foot-long Thompson Graving Dock, where RMS Titanic was hauled to check and clean its hull and fit the propellers. It was the last place she sat on … [Read more...]

The TV Farm Kings and Their Freedom Farms are What Reality TV should Really Be

July 17, 2014 by Habeeb Salloum5 Comments

We drove through a green rolling countryside as we made our way to Freedom Farms for the final meal of the day to end our tour of Butler County - an hour's drive north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I was looking forward to our last meal of the tour in the rural part of the state with its wholesome and hearty home-cooked farm food. The Freedom Farms family is led by their outstanding mother, Lisa, a divorced mother of ten. She is the … [Read more...]

VW Bus Bar, Naughty Squirrel & Riga Latvia

July 15, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

We first popped into Riga on a bus from Tallinn - the old town is a short few minute walk away but we didn't yet know this. After we located the word "old town" in Latvian on the Internet and showed a taxi driver our phone screen - he just laughed and pointed in the direction of where we needed to walk. Two minutes later we walked into the Riga Old Town Hostel & Backpackers Pub where we immediately spotted the reception; it was located inside … [Read more...]
