Maui's Front Street Named one of "10 Great Streets" for 2011

The American Planning Association recognizes authenticity and economic opportunity

Lahaina, MAUI, Hawaii - The American Planning Association (APA) announced the country's 10 Great Neighborhoods, 10 Great Streets, and 10 Great Public Spaces for 2011 through the organization's national program, Great Places in America. Maui's Front Street was named one of the top ten "Great Streets" along with others including Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA; U Street N.W., Washington, DC; and Washington Avenue, St. Louis, among others.

Launched in 2007, Great Places in America recognizes unique and exemplary streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces - three essential components of all communities. These authentic places have been shaped by forward thinking planning that showcases diverse architectural styles, promotes community involvement and accessibility, and fosters economic opportunity.

APA Great Places offer better choices for where and how people work and live every day. They are defined by many characteristics including architectural features, accessibility, functionality, and community involvement. To date, 140 places have been designated in all 50 states.

"This designation truly speaks to the merchants, business organizations and especially the people of Maui who live and work in our historic town of Lahaina," stated Terryl Vencl, executive director, Maui Visitors and Convention Bureau. "Lahaina continues to revitalize itself and as a result, it remains a popular and beloved destination for our visitors and kamaaina (residents) alike."

The first capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, Lahaina is a fun-loving historic town that today is a reflection of its colorful past. Approximately 55 acres of the town have been set aside as historic districts containing several sites designated as National Historical Landmarks. Dozens of art galleries offer the worlds of both acclaimed local artists and masters such as Dali, Chagall and Miro.

The restaurant scene is equally exciting. Added to the menu of fine seafood establishments overlooking Lahaina harbor are a host of innovative restaurants specializing in Hawaii Regional Cuisine. Some are situated in meticulously restored historic buildings, and all serve the freshest local ingredients prepared with a masterful blending of classic Asian and Continental techniques and the unique taste of paradise. The result is a culinary triumph that earns rave reviews from food critics around the country.

The Maui Visitors and Convention Bureau is a subsidiary of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau. HVCB is contracted by the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), the state of Hawaii's tourism agency, for marketing management services in North America. The HTA was established in 1998 to ensure a successful visitor industry well into the future. Its mission is to strategically manage Hawaii tourism in a sustainable manner consistent with the state of Hawaii's economic goals, cultural values, preservation of natural resources, community desires, and visitor industry needs.

The islands of Maui Nui (Maui County) offer three very distinct Hawaiian experiences. World-class resorts, award winning cuisine, championship golf, stunning natural beauty and the islands' host Hawaiian culture have propelled Maui Nui into the limelight.
