Medieval Past

New
York, April 1, 2010: Each April,
Zurich celebrates the end of winter with
a spring festival, complete with
parades, medieval costumes and the
ceremonial burning of a "snowman." This
year, the city's renowned hotel
Baur au
Lac has created a special package
to celebrate this long-held tradition.
Sechseläuten
dates back to the 14th
century when the 6PM ringing of the
bells during the spring and summer,
known as Sechseläuten, marked the
end of the workday. Fast-forward to
today, and the celebration commemorates
the end of the harsh winter and the
beginning of spring. The festivities
start on the third Sunday of April with
a parade of children dressed in
historical costumes, accompanied by a
giant
Böögg "snowman"
(made from cotton and wood). The
following day, a parade of costumed
adults on horseback and on foot march
through the city and down to the shores
of Lake Zurich, where at 6PM the
Böögg, whose head is filled with
explosives, is burned in a special
ceremony. Tradition says that the
quicker the Böögg explodes, the
better the summer will be.
Guests who stay at the Baur au Lac
during this festival will not only learn
about the city's rich and vibrant
history, but will also indulge in 21st-century
state-of-the art amenities and five-star
service. The
Sechseläuten
package includes:
-
One night's accommodation
-
5-course dinner in the newly
renovated Pavillion restaurant
-
Fresh fruit and homemade sweets from
the hotel's in-house chocolatier
upon arrival
-
Unlimited use of the rooftop fitness
club
-
VAT and service charges

Valid from April 16th through
April 20th, 2010, the package
is priced at CHF 710 (approximately
US$668) for single occupancy, and from
CHF 1,150 (approximately US$1,082) for
double occupancy.
