Chillin’ in Panama

November 7, 2010 by Dave8 Comments

Arrived in Panama (my last North American country to visit) after a very quick break between the Egypt trip- looks like the main city is booming - cranes and towering skyscrapers (some in progress) are lined up all along the shoreline. We are staying in an upscale International chain hotel but with a twist. There is large color photo that spans the length of the wall of semi nude women. Ummm yea. Panama has their own currency, the Balboa - but … [Read more...]

The Other Side of Everest

November 6, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Other Side of Everest by Matt Dickinson This gripping tale is told by a fairly novice climber (at the time) who summits Mt. Everest from the north side during the infamous climbing season of 1996. He joins a team from the UK to film an Everest expedition. Ultimately he along with the UK's most famous high elevation climber, Alan Hinkes and three Sherpas are thrown together after a number of their group drops out. They all summit - … [Read more...]

Relaxing in Alexandria

November 2, 2010 by Dave8 Comments

Arrived in Alexandria at 1am after catching a few flights up from Luxor. Ended up staying at the historic Sofitel in old Alexandria, woke up late and walked out to our balcony. We were greeted to a beautiful view of the blue Mediterranean coastline and the buildings of the city which stretched in all directions around the bay. A friend of a friend picked us up and immediately told us "don't get scared if you feel like you are in a Hollywood … [Read more...]

Get-Aways for the Holiday Season 2010

November 1, 2010 by Carolan NathanLeave a Comment

London and York, two essentially English Hotspots! Many people celebrate the holidays in their own homes that can sometimes be absolutely marvellous, and sometimes not so especially when much planning and work are incurred. Of course, if you are smart, you will check the brochures and airlines for another way to enjoy the holiday season and I am happy to share two wonderful venues with you. Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill Set in … [Read more...]

Synopsis: Detailing the history up to the present day of Coventry, a once medieval city in the heart of England. The recent discovery of the Doom Painting, "one of the most important discoveries ever made in the field of medieval art" in Holy Trinity Church. 65 years have gone by since the ending of World War 11 and much water has passed under the bridge. Hazel Mail

November 1, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Hazel Mail (Reviewed: Nov 2011) is a slick new service that updates the "old style" process of sending postcards by using the Internet rather than sending a physical paper postcard. Simply bring up their website, www.hazelmail.com and upload one of your travel photos, write your short letter, and fill in the address information. This costs merely $1.50 to send to most locations in the world. For the time it takes to track down a postcard in a … [Read more...]

Hanging out on the Nile

November 1, 2010 by Dave4 Comments

Spent the afternoon swimming and sailing languidly on the Nile River along its western bank just up river from Luxor. Fellucas (wooden boats with one large sail and no boom) dot the shoreline on both sides of the river in Felluca. As a result competition is stiff for tourist dollars and like anything else we've tried to buy you can really bargain down the price. We ended up at 30 Egyptian pounds for a several hour sailboat ride after the price … [Read more...]

Visit Macau – November 2010

November 1, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Macau is a small island located about an hour's ferry ride from the main ferry terminal in Hong Kong (or about 16 minutes via Helicopter from the same ferry terminal). Macau has its own immigration and you will need your passport to enter and exit the country. Typically both Hong Kong dollars and the Pataca (local currency) are accepted. Macau was controlled by Portugal for 400+ years and the Portuguese have certainly left their mark on the … [Read more...]
