I've discovered Paradise - Ohrid on the shores of Lake Ohrid in Macedonia. This is the ideal spot for anyone to spend a few weeks or months or more. But especially for travel writers - where one can easily be inspired to write by the natural beauty of this area. September is a good time to visit - many of the tourists have already left, leaving still warm weather and empty beaches for one to enjoy. Bring a lot of good books, browse the shops … [Read more...]
Matka Canyon, Macedonia
Pulled into Skopje late last night and like many of the cities in the nearby countries - easily found free wifi - a lifesaver when you are winging every hotel or hostel at the last minute. Looking for a break from the fast paced travel of the last few days - I got up Sunday morning and caught the early bus to Matka - which is just on the outskirts of the city. Most cities would kill to have a place like this within spitting distance of its … [Read more...]
Dropping onto Saipan
Dropped into Saipan in the dead of night - starry skies, the blackness of the sea greeted us - disturbed only by the lights emanating from this small island. I had only done cursory research before our visit here and after speaking for nearly 2 hours to my seatmate who lives here now - I wasn't really sure what to expect. He spoke of sweat shops (now extinct), high alcoholism, a hub for smuggling drugs in from China, unemployment, gambling … [Read more...]
The Wende Museum, Culver City
I've been visiting Los Angeles and Orange County museums for a number of years - taking advantage of the variety and numbers of museums in the area whenever time permits. A few days ago I had the opportunity to visit the Wende Museum located in a suite in an unassuming business park in Culver City. All visits are arranged in advance by appointment only. Wende, in German means "turning point," making reference to the fall of Communism. The focus … [Read more...]
Wieliczka Salt Mine, Poland
While flying somewhere in Europe last month on a short Wizz Air flight we happened to spot an article about the salt mines near Krakow in the in-flight magazine. Hey, an in-flight magazine on a budget airline and more leg room than say Ryan Air - we were happy. In any case, the article caught my eye - a salt mine that continuously operated for 700 years and over time contained huge man-made caves, tunnels and sculptures carved entirely from rock … [Read more...]
Los Angeles Consortium of Online Travel, September Meetup
Wanted to squeeze this post in between our continuing Europe trip posts. The Los Angeles Consortium of Online Travel (for travel writers and bloggers and those who love to travel) is an excellent monthly networking event held in the Los Angeles area for those in the online travel industry in the LA area. In addition, a local charity is always featured at each meetup (this month its Project Angel Food and a representative gives a short … [Read more...]
Flam Norway
We find ourselves under the grey skies at the marina in flam Norway overlooking the beautiful fjord. Another blog iPhone update! We are slowly making our way to western Norway fighting the cold rain and grey skies for the past week. Today we became uber excited upon seeing the sun for the first time in Norway. This was as the train cruised past the impressive glaciers on top of Europe's highest plateau. The last hour of today's train ride … [Read more...]
Europe Trip Highlights
The following are some highlights from our latest trip to Europe: Partying late late in Belgrade Serbia - awesome party town, night clubs on old boats in the river. This was going to be museum-less trip, but we made exception for Nikola Tesla museum in Belgrade - we visited the museum and were duly impressed with the exhibits in action and hearing about his life on the guided tour Budapest - Buda Thai restaurant, one of best Thai … [Read more...]
Hanging out in London
We arrived in London after a 2.5 hour flight from Split Croatia. We love the budget airlines in Europe - last minute prices are the same as reserving your flights ahead of time for a number of the airlines. Wizz Air, Easy Jet, Ryan Air etc. London of course is one of the world's major cities - its easy to get lost in the city and its historical attractions. One is never bored for things to do here! There are world class museums - the Tate Modern … [Read more...]
Kotor Montenegro
We are chilling high above the scenic town of Kotor (rhymes with Motor) situated in this amazing, southern most Fjord in all of Europe. We are staying with a family in their home in the hills above the main part of town. The city is lit up, the breeze warm, and the musty earthy smell of the surrounding fig trees all around us. We are also enjoying a late harvest dessert wine from Oremus, one of Hungary's finest wineries in the Tokaj region. Not … [Read more...]
