Chena Hot Springs, Crazy Squirrel and Plenty of Sunshine!

August 16, 2014 by Dave6 Comments

Since visiting Chena Hot Springs (pronounced Cheena) several years ago, I've recently had the urge to revisit this neat little part of Alaska - merely a 90 minute drive from Fairbanks. And sunlight nearly all night in these northern latitudes was also appealing. It is almost 11pm as I type this outdoors, swatting nats and the occasional mosquito and there is bright light still! Sunset is around 1am and sunrise around 3am but it never really gets … [Read more...]

The Mauritian Chronicles: Paradise Lost and Found

August 16, 2014 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

John M. Edwards grabs his “Beachcombers Card” and does Divali (Festival of Lights) on delicious Mauritius, a paradisiacal Indian Ocean isle--once the roost of extinct dodos, now the boast of professional beachbums--which initially he can’t place on a map! “Incredible!” You are from New York?!” boomed Willy Van Damme, a friendly Belgian restaurateur and former soldier of fortune, in the sleepy resort town of Péreybere. “Very rare! We get almost … [Read more...]

Celebrating the Caribbean Experience in London

August 13, 2014 by Dave2 Comments

Looking for some additional “warmth” through the end of the year in London? Perhaps simply the sound of the word Caribbean will quickly make you start dreaming of the region's warmth - both in weather and hospitality. Or more, start you thinking about white sand beaches, island music, tropical rum and relaxation. If you cannot physically get to the Caribbean this year and you are in London, the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum hotel (located in … [Read more...]

Into Africa: Can BushCats Save the Beasts?

August 12, 2014 by Richard BangsLeave a Comment

“There is an elephant holocaust going on in Africa today,” says Paul Maritz, the last gentleman adventurer. “Up to this point elephant counts have been done by error-prone Mark 1 Eyeballs, and nobody believes the numbers. You really can’t motivate people to take needed drastic actions unless they are convinced you have the facts. And so we need to get the facts.” Rhodesia born Paul and his brother David have created a flying machine they … [Read more...]

Ruby Canyon: An Isolated Jewel of the West

August 12, 2014 by Jeffery CassityLeave a Comment

The one and only time I passed through Ruby Canyon was on my way west aboard Amtrak's California Zephyr.   It was on my trip to start a new life in California in May 2013.   Located on the Colorado River on the Colorado-Utah border, the only access to the canyon, other than the passing through on the Union Pacific Railroad lines that Amtrak uses for the Zephyr, is the river(i.e.rafting).  It is a marvelous site to behold. The canyon is roughly … [Read more...]

Nightless nights in the Land of the Midnight Sun

August 10, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

Summer is finally here and there’s nowhere better to make the most of the warmer weather and longer days than in Finland – the Land of the Midnight Sun. The most iconic of Finnish phenomena, also known as the nightless night or polar day, the Midnight Sun sets Finland apart from any other summer holiday destination, where almost endless summer days mean that there’s twice as much fun to be had in the open air. When nights are almost as light … [Read more...]

The Dry Tortugas Are Far Out, All Right—in So Many Ways

August 10, 2014 by Tom Bentley2 Comments

A conch, a parrot and a rooster walk into a bar. You don’t need a map to follow that joke: you know you’re in the Florida Keys. The Keys are one of the few places in the US where you might think, “What country am I in?” But wherever you are in the Keys, it’s all good—I’ve never been in an area that has more of a smiling “what the hell, why not?” attitude. It’s on a place’s edges where you see the more unusual sights, and for the southern … [Read more...]

Munich Vs. Berlin

August 9, 2014 by Goksu KoksoyLeave a Comment

I’ve been waiting to write a post about Berlin and Munich. Most people who know me know that I’m in love with Munich. However, there is another city in Germany that can make me feel better than in Munich, Berlin. I’ve been thinking about why this is so and I’ve realized that if Munich is a mother scolding his son so that he doesn’t break her precious vase, Berlin is the son, who already broke the vase. In Berlin, people are comfortable with … [Read more...]
