Not a skier? Not a problem!

Thanks to snow-packed backcountry covering over 18,000 acres, Idaho is known as one of the best places to ski or snowboard in North America. But if slopes and chairlifts aren’t your jam, you can find plenty of outdoor fun in the Gem State—from family-friendly to thrill-seeking and everything in between.

Fat biking – Riders of all levels can traverse the snowy terrain thanks to the agility (and thick-treaded tires) of fat bikes. Cruise the slopes at Kelly Canyon Ski Resort, where you’ll find 12 miles of groomed terrain or enjoy the ups and downs along Schweitzer’s 20-mile Nordic trail system. Winter-riding aficionados will want to experience the miles of specialized fat bike trails at Jug Mountain Ranch. Most resorts offer rentals.

Snowmobiling – Explore Idaho’s rugged wintry landscapes on a backcountry snowmobile trip. Idaho is home to several destinations for snowmobiling with varying levels of difficulty. Whether you gather the family for a guided tour or venture off the beaten path on your own, you’ll find an opportunity to hit the throttle in the Idaho mountains.

Tucked between the southern shore of Payette Lake and the Payette National Forest, McCall is a charming vacation destination any time of year. In winter, McCall transitions into a snow-covered wonderland that provides the perfect setting for the McCall Winter Carnival. Returning in 2022, this highly anticipated 10-day event is well-known for its life-size snow-and-ice-sculpture contest along with a variety of activities, including torchlight parades, fireworks over the lake, live music, snowbike races and much more.

Fire & Ice Winterfest | Lava Hot Springs February 4–6, 2022
If you’re into the unique and unusual, the Fire & Ice Winterfest should be on your winter itinerary. Fire & Ice Winterfest is held annually the first full weekend in February in the intimate and relaxing resort town of Lava Hot Springs. The festival is known for the Polar Float Parade, where brave guests navigate the chilly Portneuf River on float tubes in costume, and Running of the Bulls, where participants run from pool to pool among the town’s iconic natural hot springs.

Labelle Lake Ice Palace | Rigby December 17, 2021–February 2022
A world forged from ice and snow, complete with ice passages and slides, Labelle Lake Ice Palace is a true winter wonderland in eastern Idaho. With regular fire shows and horse-drawn sleigh rides, a visit to Labelle Lake Ice Palace is full of cool times and warm memories.
