The Three Places You Should Visit in Uruguay – as Soon as Possible and Slightly Off Season

May 7, 2015 by Claudia Tavani3 Comments

Uruguay attractions

I arrived in Uruguay at the very end of a four months backpacking trip. I was exhausted, and all I wanted to do was rest, lay in the sun, enjoy the sea breeze, eat nice food and write. My expectations were met and exceeded, and by the time I boarded the first of a number of flights that would take me back to Sardinia, I knew I was in love with the country and would have to go back in the future.   Locked between Argentina and … [Read more...]

Loco Moco: The Ultimate Hawaiian Comfort Food

May 2, 2015 by Jamin TomLeave a Comment

What is it? One of my all-time favorite Hawaiian foods, the Loco Moco is a concoction of ground beef, fried egg, gravy and sticky rice. If you have not discovered the pleasures of eating this, be sure to mark it down on your bucket list. It’s even easy enough to make on your own! Hawaii is truly a culinary melting pot and the LocoMoco is living proof that when Western cuisine meshes with Asian, good things happen. Really good things. Before I … [Read more...]

A Few Musings on First Night in Moldova

April 24, 2015 by Dave3 Comments

Sometimes you meet inspiring travelers while on the road - such was the case this evening in Chisinau, Moldova. I met a young woman traveler from Japan who took bought a 50CC motorbike in Irkutsk Russia and rode it some 14,000 kilometers solo from Russia to the Romanian Moldova border. She had stories of her time on the road as a trip of this length will invariably create. She camped much of the time but when it was raining or otherwise bad … [Read more...]

Backpacker’s Prayer

April 22, 2015 by Justin CarmackLeave a Comment

I found this taped to a wall in a bar in Riga, Latvia, and I thought it was pretty funny so I wrote it down! Also check out 10 Things to do in Riga! I'm not very religious, but I thought this was a great backpacker's prayer!  --Heavenly father, look down on us as your humble, obedient backpackers, who are doomed to travel this earth, taking photographs, mailing post cards, buying souvenirs and walking around in drip dry underwear. Give us … [Read more...]

Find the Quiet Side of Venice in Santa Elena

April 12, 2015 by Ron Engeldinger1 Comment

For most visitors, the Venice that they visit is jam-packed with crowds. The city is packed with spectacular sights and is one of the most popular tourist sites in Italy. It is one of my favorite European destinations. The city is wonderful any time of the year so I always schedule my visits for the off-season. Even then, I have been amazed at the number of visitors. Someone recently described Venice to me as a "Disneyland for adults" with … [Read more...]

Halifax’s Historic Halliburton House Inn

April 7, 2015 by Ariane ColenbranderLeave a Comment

Halliburton House Inn signage, Halifax

From my ground-floor queen bedroom, I can hear the early evening final calls of the birds outside in the trees. Such a blissful moment, particularly after a late afternoon spring shower. We’re checked in at The Halliburton House Inn for a night, and I’m happy with everything in this room, from the cozy bed to the period furniture and fireplace. A coffee maker sits on the desk in a corner. A wing-back chair will serve as the perfect spot to … [Read more...]

Star Searching, Celebrity House Spotting with Starline Tours, Hollywood

March 25, 2015 by DaveLeave a Comment

What better time to take a Starline guided tour of Hollywood and hunt for celebrity homes and celebrities than during the Academy Award weekend. Hollywood's epic event attracts a number of celebrities to town, parties and those looking to see celebrities. Sure Hollywood is more chaotic then usual - with part of Hollywood Blvd shut down in the vicinity of Dolby Theatre and the buzz about the event by most everyone who happens to be in the … [Read more...]

The Audacious Promises of Sustainable Tourism

March 4, 2015 by Jamon MokLeave a Comment

The audacious promises of sustainable tourism The promise that was never lived up to Don’t we all wish we could do more good while having the time of our lives travelling? Years ago, when I was still a student, a big part of my travel memories were filled with little children tugging at my jeans for a donation, the homeless out on the streets or seeing the local people do amazing crafts but only finding out after that they are extremely … [Read more...]

Riviera Cancun: Secrets Silversands Resort

February 23, 2015 by Ariane Colenbrander5 Comments

Secrets Silversands Resort

Looking at numerous websites, Trip Advisor reviews, and tips from friends, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to picking a travel destination and resort. My husband and I wanted to visit the Riviera Maya this month, in a location away from the thumping of Cancun or Playa del Carmen. What we found was Puerto Morelos, a smaller town smack in between the two, yet close enough to get to the Mayan ruins while enjoying the warm, tropical breezes of … [Read more...]
