Colca Canyon, Peru – July 2010

July 1, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Colca Canyon Peru is one of Peru's treasures - a canyon so deep that only one other canyon in the world is deeper, a place so little visited yet its only 5 hours from Arequipa, Peru's largest southern city. Hiking trips can be arranged from Arequipa. Typically you can hike to the bottom from the canyon's rim in several hours along trails that switchback down the sides. The bottom of the canyon has an almost Mediterranean feel. There are fig … [Read more...]

A Few Words about Madagascar

May 15, 2010 by Bernard PollackLeave a Comment

Sometimes it's good to be cautious--and other times it's better to go with your gut. People told us not to visit Madagascar, that political conflict made the country unsafe for tourists. But we decided to go anyway because if we had listened to those voices, we'd never have gone to Nairobi, Kampala, or Kigali. We are cautious when we travel, but aware that our best and most eye-opening experiences are places well off the beaten … [Read more...]

A Few Words About Kenya

March 31, 2010 by Bernard PollackLeave a Comment

Our entry begins in Maralal, Kenya, a place mostly known for its wildlife. And as we made the seven hour, bumpy trek from Nairobi-half of it on unpaved roads-we saw our fair share of water buffaloes, rhinos, impala, and giraffes. But we weren't here to go on safari. We were here to meet with a group of pastoralists-livestock keepers who had agreed to meet with us and talk about the challenges they face. Although most of these people don't have … [Read more...]

Welcome to Hong Kong

March 17, 2009 by Amanda S. CollinsLeave a Comment

"Welcome to Hong Kong. If you are connecting to another flight, we wish you safe travels. On behalf of my crew, we thank you for flying Cathay Pacific." It wasn't her voice that caused the jolt; the official announcement that I had made it to Hong Kong was what … [Read more...]
