'Do not buy this book'! It will change the way you look at the wine industry and will certainly make collectors of high end wines think twice about their purchases. Author Dinkelspiel has created a mesmerizing look at greed, deception and crime throughout California's storied wine history. Central to the story is Mark Anderson, a wine aficionado whose nefarious activities in the wine world culiminate when he sets fire in 2005 to a wine … [Read more...]
Northern Galicia Coast: Rinlo and Cathedral Beach
I ended up visiting Cathedral Beach in Galicia by chance. My boyfriend and I had planned a weekend in Galicia (we're currently living in Madrid short-term for his job, but he's from Galicia) and we decided to simply look for a casa rural (a rurally located Spanish B&B) that was a good price, and that was in a good location. Where, didn't matter all that much. I had wanted to explore Galicia long before I met my boyfriend so when we met, … [Read more...]
Four of my favourite farm stalls in the Western Cape South Africa
As a child, whenever my parents told me we were going on holiday I became really excited, not only for the destination, but for all the stops that we’d make along the way. It’s tradition in our family that when we travel, that we stop at a farm stall to purchase organic vegetables and fruit, biltong and delicious farmstyle pies. So now I’m going to share with you four of my favourite farm stalls along the N2 in the Western Cape that my family … [Read more...]
Don’t Date a Girl Who Treks
She's the girl with the uneven tanned body Scorched skin from the rays of the sun from trekking the high passes. She's the girl with the high cut boots And a pair of trekking poles that she depends her life on She's the girl who catches the sunrise and sunset For either of them will suit her just fine. Don't date a girl who treks For this means you wake up at some ungodly hour and race your feet to the tops of the … [Read more...]
A Perfect Picture Paradise, Pissouri Cyprus
After another epic yet challenging trip in Jordan followed by the stresses of travelling in Lebanon I was more then ready to go somewhere and 'do nothing'. However, one never really knows if your perception of a relaxing destination will actually meet your expectation once you arrive. Time and time again I've been disappointed when looking for the "perfect" place to relax - a place that is not overly touristy, has a good vibe, is surrounded by … [Read more...]
Quick Stops Around Napa Valley
So you're visiting the Bay Area and you've learned that Napa Valley in Northern California has been making a name for itself as a world class destination (for some time now, actually). Now wouldn't it be great to go wine tasting there? Brilliant! Most people only have a day to spend. And there's a variety of ways to spend this day. Some book wine tours, some rent a car (or bikes or Segways) and take in the scenery, and enjoy some fine wines … [Read more...]
Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate Vineyards
High on a hillside, a modern Tuscan-style villa claims expansive views all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Following the steep drive up from Kanan Rd. you see some small vineyards on either side. You can also arrive at the villa by air as it has its own heliport. What I saw of the inside of the villa was sparsely furnished, with spacious rooms. Most rooms were closed off due to the event underway when I was there. It was a gorgeous late winter … [Read more...]
Tbilisi at First Glance
Our shared van sped across the mountains of northern Armenia seemingly on a race track - passing every vehicle in our path. At speeds like this, the drive was thrilling - and beautiful when we could catch glimpses of the surrounding countryside. Spring time has brought green grass as far as the eye can see interrupted by flowers blooming. This is why I enjoy chasing spring and summer around the planet - with weather such as this. Warm and clear … [Read more...]
Whales & Wine: The Perfect Pairing
Every fall, more than 20,000 Pacific gray whales begin to migrate south from their feeding grounds in the Bering Sea to their breeding grounds in the warm waters of Baja California. They pass by Mendocino County twice: going south from November through February, and going north from February through May. With an average lifespan of 50 years, they swim an astonishing 10,000 miles each and every year. Calves are at least a month old before they … [Read more...]
Visiting the World’s Oldest Winery in Armenia
Arguably the highlight today was visiting the world's oldest known winery - located about an hour and 10 minutes drive from Yerevan (based on the way our driver took to the roads aggressively - probably much slower if driven normally!). This site was 'discovered' in 2007 and was excavated by Armenian, Irish and American archaeologists until about 2011. What they discovered was astounding. A sizable working winery that dates back 6,100 years! This … [Read more...]
