Intense Travel, Bangkok

March 30, 2017 by Dave14 Comments

I've spent significant time the past few months updating many of the guides on our site and will spend part of next 6 months doing so - making revisits to various destinations covered on this site. Bangkok is always uniquely challenging to update - simply because of the traffic. I have used motorcycles to get around town before but never to this extent. I call this intense travel - trying to revisit as many places as I possibly can each day, … [Read more...]

Los Angeles Travel Show

March 20, 2017 by Dave3 Comments

The first Los Angeles Travel Show I attended was many years ago at the convention center downtown - at one point there were two travel shows within a month or so of each other in Los Angeles/Long Beach - in recent years it was held at the Long Beach Convention Center - and this year it is back to where it belongs, downtown at the Los Angeles Convention Center. If you are in the Los Angeles area, enjoy travel put this consumer based travel show … [Read more...]

64.8253 Degrees South Latitude, Port Lockroy Antarctica

March 10, 2017 by Dave2 Comments

Port Lockroy is a British base that is occupied several months of the year in the summer by a few staff and is managed by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust. We visited as part of an Antarctica cruise on Oceanwide Expeditions. Space here is extremely limited as the the base is located on Goudier Island - which doesn't appear to be much larger than a small parking lot. And once the staff are on the base they are not allowed to travel off the island … [Read more...]

Cruising the Beagle Channel on the Paludine, Ushuaia Argentina

March 1, 2017 by Dave3 Comments

I wandered into one of the small tour operator huts down by the harbour in Ushuaia this afternoon to escape the rain and the cold. After inquiring about one of their tours I was soon booked for the next morning - a sailing trip through the Beagle Channel on the Paludine. Allowing only 8 people maximum on board, these sailing tours are intimate and a great way to see the wildlife. After an hour drive on both pavement and a graded dirt road we … [Read more...]

Hitchhiking Through New Zealand

February 25, 2017 by John R6 Comments

I had just spent two weeks riding around the North and South Islands of New Zealand with close friends. We rented a car, bought a teepee, and spent our days checking out the gorgeous scenery and nights spent under the stars. We had a blast, but now my friends were gone. I was all alone. The time had come to finally start hitchhiking. New Zealand is notorious for hitchhiking. The country is filled with friendly people who are used to picking … [Read more...]

Exploring Ushuaia, El Fin Del Mundo

February 15, 2017 by Dave4 Comments

After four days in a row on a plane, two of which were overnight flights I have reached El Fin del Mundo, Ushuaia - the world's southernmost city. Flying over Tierra del Fuego, we were treated to spectacularly clear views of the jagged mountains, glaciers and lakes - ultimately reaching the bays near Ushuaia and dropping into the small airport on a nearly cloudless day. My visual research prior to this trip indicated Ushuaia is rarely clear … [Read more...]

Surprised in a good way by Taipei

February 5, 2017 by Dave8 Comments

I have flown into Taipei many times over the years but never really explored the city or the surrounding countryside. For some reason I never had any interest in doing so. However, after spending 4 days in Taipei recently, I must admit that my perception of the city has changed dramatically. For those who have never been to this part of the world, Taiwan makes an excellent first choice/introduction to Asia. It is easy to get around and … [Read more...]

Finding a Great Guide in Guadeloupe: Security Guard + Convenience Store

January 22, 2017 by DaveLeave a Comment

Wandering the streets of Pointe-à-Pitre I thought I would head over to the cruise ship terminal and see if I could hook up with an in English tour (like I successfully did in Martinique). However it was another story here. The only info station I could see was behind the gates of the cruise ship terminal (and without being a passenger on one of the cruise ships I was not allowed entry). I yelled through the gates to attract the attention of the … [Read more...]

St. Kitts Eco Park

January 12, 2017 by Dave4 Comments

As I was driving around the southern part of the island I stumbled into 'little Taiwan', an eco park that is a joint effort between Taiwan and St. Kitts & Nevis. I was told Taiwan requires young men to put in a year of military service - and for those that don't serve in the military, a volunteer position satisfies this requirement. I was met at the entrance by such an individual who was spending his year of service on St. Kitts. Jimmy Wu is … [Read more...]
