Known as one of America’s snowiest cities east of the Rockies, Marquette, Michigan is the ideal location for winter adventure for families, couples or a solo getaway.

Visitors can expect to be invigorated by the outdoor winter activities – from exploring the frozen coast of Lake Superior and the surrounding snowcapped forests to skiing or fat-tire biking through Marquette Mountain to observing Marquette’s natural beauties like frozen waterfalls and seasonal wildlife. When its all over, Marquette’s downtown offers plenty of local restaurants and craft breweries to cozy up at.

Winter highlights in Marquette:
Frozen Waterfalls – The beauty of winter is on full display when Marquette’s 70+ waterfalls freeze over and create stunning walls of ice. Amid the wintry weather, between the end of December to February, many waterfalls freeze mid-movement creating an entirely new landscape that features impressive icicles and ice caves that are great for exploring.

Skiing – Whether it is the thrill of downhill or the challenge of cross country, skiing in Marquette has it all. A top attraction, Marquette Mountain has 170 skiable acres offering slopes for beginners to experts. Guests can enjoy breath-taking views of Lake Superior as they make their way down.

Snowshoeing – Snowshoeing is a great alternative to some of the more extreme ways to explore the winter wilderness that surrounds Marquette. The area boasts numerous hiking trails ideal for winter outings, all waiting to be explored. Experience the silence of winter meadows, whistling pines, ice-framed rivers and waterfalls sifting through a winter wonderland.

Fat-Tire Biking – Fat-tire biking, or snow biking, is a growing trend in the Great Lakes State and Marquette is the perfect destination for this adrenaline pumping winter activity. Immerse yourself in the beauty of Marquette’s natural landscape with over 60 miles of scenic, single-track snow bike trails for beginners, intermediates and experts.

Birding – Just in time for winter, Snowy Owls, native to the arctic tundra flock to Michigan in droves and can be spotted throughout the Great Lakes region. With a wingspan of nearly five feet, bright yellow eyes and a fluffy white coat, these magnificent birds are a boon for nature enthusiasts. In the wintertime throughout the Upper Peninsula , birders can also search for Northern Saw-Whet Owls, Bald Eagles, Winter Finches and Waxwings and other migrants.

Ice Fishing – Ice fishing is a time-honored sport and classic winter pastime that is not only fun, but easy for all ages to enjoy. When temperatures drop in the U.P., Marquette County’s 40+ lakes freeze over, offering great fishing opportunities for a variety of game such as Walleye, Northern Pike, Blue Gills, Crappie, Perch, Splake, Lake Trout, Burbot and Rainbows. As an added bonus, traversing the frozen waters allows anglers to reach the far corners of lakes typically inaccessible during the open water season. Favorites spots include Marquette’s Lower Harbor and Harlow Lake, as well as Teal Lake in Negaunee and the charming town of Gwinn.
