The Castellucci Estate, Napa Valley

On the last day of July in 2024, a gathering at the gorgeous Castellucci Estate in the heart of Napa Valley honored Roots of Peace founder and the 2023 World Food Prize Laureate and 2024 Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Heidi Kuhn.

Distinguished keynote speakers included Heidi Kuhn, Marcus Nobel of the Nobel Peace Prize Family and S.F. Consul General Dmytro Kushneruk. Guests were treated to stories of Kuhn’s work and were introduced to the new CEO Of Roots of Peace, her son, Tucker Kuhn. Another highlight was an inspirational performance of La Boheme by the San Francisco Opera and a moving ‘Prayer for Ukraine’ with Yang Ling on the piano.

Heidi Kuhn & Roots of Peace
Heidi Kuhn is a visionary leader and philanthropist renowned for her groundbreaking work in promoting global peace and sustainability. As the founder and CEO of Roots of Peace, an international humanitarian organization, she has dedicated her life to transforming war-torn lands into thriving agricultural communities. Born with a deep sense of social responsibility, Kuhn was inspired to make a difference after witnessing the devastating impacts of landmines on civilian populations. Under her leadership, Roots of Peace has successfully cleared mines and planted millions of fruit trees in countries such as Afghanistan, Vietnam, and Cambodia, enabling farmers to reclaim their land and livelihoods.

Kuhn’s innovative approach to peacebuilding through agriculture has garnered international recognition and numerous accolades. Her work not only addresses the immediate dangers posed by landmines but also fosters long-term economic development and food security in affected regions. Through her tireless efforts, Kuhn has demonstrated the power of grassroots initiatives in driving sustainable change and healing post-conflict communities. Her commitment to transforming “mines to vines” exemplifies a unique blend of compassion, determination, and strategic vision, making her a leading figure in the global movement towards a more peaceful and prosperous world.

Her work in removing landmines is a testament to her unwavering commitment to global peace and humanitarianism. As the founder and CEO of Roots of Peace, she has spearheaded efforts to clear landmines from war-torn regions and transform these dangerous areas into productive agricultural land. Her mission began in 1997 after being inspired by the late Princess Diana’s advocacy against landmines, which motivated her to address this critical issue through innovative solutions.

Roots of Peace operates in several countries heavily impacted by landmines, including Afghanistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The organization’s approach is twofold: first, they focus on the meticulous and hazardous task of demining, working with local and international experts to safely remove explosive remnants of war. This process involves advanced technologies and careful coordination to ensure the complete eradication of landmines, thereby making the land safe for habitation and cultivation.

Once the land is cleared, Kuhn’s organization implements agricultural development programs to revitalize local economies. They provide farmers with training, resources, and support to grow high-value crops such as grapes, saffron, and fruit trees. This agricultural transformation not only restores livelihoods but also fosters long-term economic stability and food security for affected communities.

Through her innovative “Mines to Vines” initiative, Heidi Kuhn has transformed over 100,000 acres of land, benefiting millions of people. Her work has garnered international acclaim, highlighting the power of combining humanitarian efforts with sustainable development to create lasting change in post-conflict regions. Kuhn’s dedication to removing landmines and restoring hope and prosperity to devastated communities exemplifies her profound impact on global peace and security.
