Global Travel Authority Lonely Planet Selects Singapore as the Best Country to Visit Next Year

NEW YORK, November 10, 2014- The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) announced today that Singapore has been selected as the number one country to visit in 2015 by Lonely Planet, the world’s leading travel media company. The Southeast Asian nation tops Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2015 and is celebrated for its wide range of offerings, which will expand in 2015 as the country celebrates its Golden Jubilee.

“We are humbled by this tremendous result, and honored by the recognition of Singapore’s efforts not just in tourism, but also in heritage conservation, greenery, dining, arts, and many other areas,” said Ms. Lynette Pang, Assistant Chief Executive, Singapore Tourism Board (STB). “Together, they have contributed greatly to grow this city into a world-class home and destination that we can all be proud of today.”

While Singapore’s grand heritage buildings, hawker centers, luxurious green spaces and shopping malls already lure many travelers, the award recognizes that a slew of new developments have elevated the ‘Singapore experience’ to new levels. Amidst these developments, Singapore also stands on the verge of an emerging fashion and food scene, where artisanal coffee and brunch have exploded in the country’s dynamic and vibrant neighborhoods.

“Between endless urban attractions and the serenity of green spaces, arguable the most defining pleasure of Singapore is its food,” Lonely Plants says. “Singapore’s fine dining scene is finally giving Bangkok, Hong Kong and Tokyo a run for their money.”

To coincide with its 50th Birthday, Singapore is ushering in a number of new attractions, including the National Art Gallery and the Singapore Sports Hub, which will host the 28th Southeast Asian Games. Together these elements create the backdrop to which Singapore will celebrate 50 years of independence in 2015.

“This accolade bears testament to the wide variety of high-quality experiences that Singapore offers, and will serve as motivation for us to continue delivering innovative tourism concepts that can further elevate the Singapore experience,” Ms. Pang says. “2015 will be a time not just of celebration for Singapore but also reflection, as we look back on the journey we have taken with a view to doing even better for the future.”

Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel media company, and Best in Travel 2015 is its 10th annual agenda-setting collection of the best trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the year ahead. Lonely Planet’s focus is on the merits of each destination and the unique experiences they offer travelers.

Singapore is expensive as Manhattan but we had a fun 5-days there in 2013 and a very expensive ‘Singapore Sling’ at the Raffles Hotel where the cocktail originated. It’s the cleanest city we visited in our world-wide travels – Tokyo #2. Now that we’re based in Bangkok, as soon as we eyeball a discounted and inexpensive flight on Air Asia Airlines to Singapore – we’ll return for a week.

Hey, would you consider something that is unique and stunning in terms of culture, nature, and activities? I mean, we all like travelling common places and famous tourist routes. But i discovered a cool and unusual place last year. I travelled to Kyrgyzstan, and it is just amazing. Dave, have you ever been there?

John – yes I LOVED my time spent in Kyrgyzstan – course I always crave mountains and hiking when I am traveling so this country was perfect – and not to mention quite affordable. Here are some pieces I have on my site about Kyrgyzstan – http://www.davestravelcorner.com/?s=kyrgyzstan – I have another longer piece coming out soon.

Michael – yes I’ve used Bangkok over the years and more than my share of Air Asia flights to visit all the neighboring countries and then countries located even further away. The only country I have left to visit is East Timor – mostly b/c I have not been able to find an affordable flight there from here, despite it not being relatively not that far away. Even Australia is a cheaper flight on Air Asia!
