Prowling the Sproul State Forest in Pennsylvania

August 2, 2011 by Marianne RuaneLeave a Comment

"There's a view there, but I'm not too sure how good it will be." View? I was all about the view. That was the reward for a difficult hike. That was the explanation I gave to my mother who could not understand "why anyone would want to walk up a mountain" - how else would I get to see wonderful vistas? How else could I stand in awe at my own puniness in the face of nature's grandness? And this hike had promised three vistas, at least one of them … [Read more...]

Select Highlights of South East Europe

August 1, 2011 by DaveLeave a Comment

These are some of the highlights of visiting select locations in Croatia, Hungary, Montenegro and Serbia. This trip was totally unscripted and unplanned. All we had were our plane tickets to Europe. We used public transportation to get around - buses, trains, city trams and metros where available. Note that while distances on the map don't look that far from each other especially along the Dalmatian Coast, the roads are narrow, windy and very … [Read more...]

Bier Festival, Berlin

June 21, 2011 by Miss MociLeave a Comment

When asked about something typically German beer will be one of the most frequent responses people will give you. Germany is a beer loving nation. Internationally probably most known is the Oktoberfest where the beer consumption reaches a climax in the country. Since there is still some time to spare until the next Oktoberfest I recommend any beer lover with an extreme craving for some German beer to start looking for Berlin apartments, because … [Read more...]

Three Days in Apimsu – Ghana, West Africa

June 5, 2011 by Maureen Rogers1 Comment

The brilliant sunlight stings my eyes as we make our way out of the airport in Accra, Ghana, but it's the view ahead that has me fighting tears. Our son Casey has been waiting at the entrance gate. Since he entered the Peace Corps in West Africa his father and I have been separated from him for many months and 7,000 miles. Now, just fifty feet across the courtyard, I see that his pale northwest skin is shades darker, his brown hair cropped close … [Read more...]

Vanuatu: One of the World’s Remaining Paradises

June 4, 2011 by Andrea WilsonLeave a Comment

When you think of a romantic island vacation, what do you imagine? Basking away peaceful days in the sun, just you and your special someone? Stealing away to hidden beaches where you frolic in the waves like children, uninterrupted by human life? Sipping a drink in your beach chair with a view over your feet that could easily be the setting for a Corona commercial? Picturesque, pristine, and private- this is the dream setting for couples … [Read more...]

The Swedish Swan Incident

June 3, 2011 by Joanne FariesLeave a Comment

"Shriek, inte. Shriek, inte." In her panic, Lisa resorted to Swedish. I tried to stop shouting, but my fear flew out of my mouth in a high-pitched scream. The flap of large white wings threatened boat upheaval. We clung to our paddles. "Why the heck did I come to Sweden, anyhow?" I thought. "I might die here today." *** When I filled out the exchange student profile, I checked the box for 'no pets'. Smoking - heck yeah, I'll inhale … [Read more...]

Once in a Lifetime

What did I know about birds? Enough to feed spinach greens, not stale muffins, to the domestic ducks at Recreation Park in my hometown of Long Beach, CA. Enough to avoid annoying the thirty-pound swans in London's Hyde Park. Enough to understand that silence was golden while trailing knowledgeable birdwatchers in the woods near The House of the Doves at Uxmal. And once, at my grandmother's house in Los Angeles when I was ten, I learned the hard … [Read more...]

"The future is an opaque mirror. Anyone who tries to look into it sees nothing but the dim outlines of an old and worried face." --Jim Bishop The morning of September 11, 2001, as a Peace Corps trainer I'd scarcely opened an HIV/AIDS seminar in a shabby hotel two hours north of Port-au-Prince, when the Haiti health program manager pulled me aside. "The World Trade Center and the Pentagon have been attacked by planes," she whispered. "It's … [Read more...]

The 17th Super Bock Super Rock in Lisbon

April 12, 2011 by Miss MociLeave a Comment

Since it is never too early to find out about big music events and festival season is about to kick off, let's turn our attention to Lisbon, Portugal because from July 14th until the 16th it will host the 17th edition of the Super Bock Super Rock, one of the biggest rock festivals in Portugal. I have to be a bit more precise, as the actual place of the festival is Meco, Sesimbra which is about 40km away from Lisbon which make this an … [Read more...]

The Cyprus Tug o War

April 6, 2011 by Roni WeissLeave a Comment

The first thing that drew me to Cyprus is that they are another of those countries that "doesn't exist". The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is only recognized by Turkey itself. It's also known as "North(ern) Cyprus". According to the European Union (and much of the world), the whole island is one country. The reality of this is pretty clearly in dispute, as the TRNC runs its own border control at its (internationally unrecognized) … [Read more...]
