The American’s Guide to Martinique

June 2, 2016 by Chris Picardi6 Comments

We decided to go to Martinique purely because we found extremely affordable tickets nonstop from Boston. Norwegian Airlines (yes that is a real airline) now has a direct flight from Boston to Fort de France for $220 which almost sounds too good to be true. Prior to stumbling upon these flights, we knew absolutely nothing about the island, but after our week-long adventure we consider ourselves experts and wish to share our new-found knowledge … [Read more...]

Dream Lake Hike

May 30, 2016 by Chris Picardi2 Comments

In my humble opinion, Dream Lake Trail is the best winter hike in the Rocky Mountain National Park. Granted, we’ve only done two winter hikes in this park, so our opinion may or may not have any value. But that’s neither here nor there. The fact of the matter is that this hike is unbelievable from start to finish. Sure, there are plenty of higher elevation hikes in the park, but in mid-January, those 14,000+ hikes might as well require a … [Read more...]

The Unique Beauty of Antarctica

May 17, 2016 by Dave8 Comments

The cruise director on the Basecamp Ortelius on our Antarctica cruise with Oceanwide Expeditions said something that perked my interest, "Antarctica is a feeling" and I immediately wondered what type of feeling it would induce in me once I arrived. It turns out it is not just one feeling but rather many. What you see in front of you evokes numerous feelings and reactions including awe, the grandeur and magnitude of your surroundings gives you … [Read more...]

Heli Ski Alaska? Heli Yes!

May 11, 2016 by Susan Betteridge2 Comments

My penultimate bucket list ski experience has always been to heli ski in Alaska—miles of untouched powder and fresh lines for days. No lift lines, no resort creature comforts and nothing but badass skiing. As my blog will tell you, after a year of planning I was pretty stoked when my brother and I joined up with Dean Cummings’ H2O Guides to heli ski the 4,000 square-mile playground called the Chuggach Mountains near Valdez, Alaska. Whether … [Read more...]

My Climb of Mount Ararat

May 3, 2016 by Robin Barone4 Comments

Climbing Mount Ararat was a dream of mine since childhood! I would stare at the picture posted above the chalkboard exactly in the center of the room at Armenian School and think, “Why are we just looking at? Why can’t we climb to the top?” I have been blessed that my life has taken me to nearly 60 countries where I connected with Armenian communities in South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Our language, food, and music … [Read more...]

Amasya, a Gem in Turkey’s Black Sea Region

April 8, 2016 by Inka Piegsa-QuischotteLeave a Comment

As so often happens, it all started with a story. “Have you ever heard the legend of Ferhat and Sirin?” my Turkish friend asked whilst we were discussing some pretty interesting Turkish folklore characters of which there are plenty. “No,” I replied, ear cocked and pen poised, ready to take note of another tale for my growing collection. “Ah, it’s  so sad, sooo romantic,” she sighed being a consummate actress into the bargain. “You see, it all … [Read more...]

A Few Interesting Notes about St. Barths in the Caribbean

April 7, 2016 by DaveLeave a Comment

Here are a few notes from what I was told by those living on the island and or from first hand experience. - Flying onto the short airport runway in a small plane is an exciting experience - The island is only 8 square miles but due to its mountainous topography feels bigger than it actually is - The island's electricity is powered by diesel generators - Homes have cisterns to collect rainwater - The roads are narrow and windy and people … [Read more...]

Basecamp Ortelius, Ushuaia to Antarctica Cruise with Oceanwide Expeditions

April 4, 2016 by Dave5 Comments

Oceanwide Expeditions is a pioneer in cruise-based exploration of both Antarctica and the Arctic regions. Based in the Netherlands and with an office in Houston - their focus is on small ship Antarctica & Arctic cruise adventures to parts of the world that see relatively few visitors. Many of the staff on board have been with the company for years. In an environment where there is an extremely thin line for survival, safety is paramount; in … [Read more...]
