The Skyclad Jain Monks in Kundalpur

August 6, 2006 by Manuela Pop4 Comments

During our four months trip in India this year, my husband and I stopped in Khajuraho to visit the Erotic Temples. There, we heard of a small village Kundalpur, where hundreds of Jain Monks will gather in a two-day festival to celebrate fifty women becoming Jain mothers. We left Khajuraho together with a local Jain couple and their family car for Kundalpur to take part in the festival. Kundalpur turned out to be a very enriching and deeply … [Read more...]

Tourists In Malta Reclaim The Streets

August 6, 2006 by Roger MunnsLeave a Comment

Frequent and repeat incidents of visitors being confronted in the street while on holiday in Malta has led to the Maltese authorities taking action against the timeshare companies who employ sales staff to seek out possible visiting buyers. Complaints have risen in recent years from holiday makers who have had their time on the island spoiled by being approached on a daily basis to attend presentations - that can last up to four hours - in the … [Read more...]

How to Avoid The Pitfalls of Using a Taxi

August 6, 2006 by Dave1 Comment

In general, this article is about problematic taxi drivers. It is really hard to put a percentage on the "bad" taxi drivers I've used on trips around the world as each country is different and it is these "bad" drivers who really stand out in your mind. If I had to choose a number, I would say maybe 30-40 percent of the taxi drivers I've used around the world have tried to pull something shady on me. In the same grain, there are many taxi drivers … [Read more...]

Amsterdam with an Attitude

July 25, 2006 by JillLeave a Comment

Amsterdam - the name inspires thoughts of impressionists and culture. Rembrandt and Vermeer in Rijksmuseum and the disturbing paintings of Van Gogh. The historic downtown, the culture and the canals are one reason to visit this great capital. Of course, for others it's the spirit of 'tolerance' for things like soft drugs(pot smoking) and legal red light district which make it an interesting destination. As an observer at least. While Amsterdam … [Read more...]

The G.A.P Top 5: ‘Undiscovered’ Destinations

July 21, 2006 by Helen HewetsonLeave a Comment

"These gems are all fascinating in their own right, and surprisingly undiscovered. Nicaragua is (according to some!) destined to become the next big thing in travel. I can't disagree, the great weather, beautiful beaches, volcanoes, and fantastic cities are just a hop away from North America, yet the destination remains relatively undiscovered. Further south, is a place I became enchanted with - Peru! The ancient, mystical site of Choquequirao … [Read more...]

The G.A.P Top 5: Places of Independence

July 21, 2006 by Carl MichenerLeave a Comment

1. Yukon, Canada There's nothing you know like your own backyard, and even if it's 7000 km away from home it's still more familiar than Mexico, which is closer. Canada's Yukon, east of Alaska and north of British Columbia, has attracted independent types since frontier days. I like trekking in the mountains, which there are lots of (the last ice age missed this part of the continent) and the long light in the summertime. I don't recommend … [Read more...]

Mt. Rainier National Park, WA – July 2006

July 1, 2006 by DaveLeave a Comment

Mt. Rainier National Park - If you are in the great state of Washington, USA consider a visit to its most famous mountain, Mt. Rainier. This mountain is one of the tallest mountains in the lower 48 states, topping out at 14,410 feet under its huge jagged upper glacier covered slopes. If you plan on climbing to the top, having a guide is recommended unless you have prior roped up experience with glaciers, crevasses and rock falls. For the less … [Read more...]

The G.A.P Top 5: Travel Memories

June 21, 2006 by Katie RossLeave a Comment

This was enormously difficult for me. First of all, choosing a top five is never easy. Ranking was totally out of the question! And then condensing days and days of vivid and rich experiences into a little summarized blurb was near impossible. I could go on and on but here are 5 of my fondest travel experiences. Montezuma, Costa Rica Body-surfed for breakfast after having watched the spectacular sunrise through my tattered tent door then … [Read more...]

Choquequirao – the Real Lost City of the Inca

June 14, 2006 by Alex WelshLeave a Comment

Machu Picchu is one of those things you can't miss, even if you hate crowds and band wagons. It is undoubtedly gorgeous and profound. However, all that 'lost city' stuff sounds like a cheap cliche these days. What is so lost about a shiny train, a bunch of new coaches, international cuisine, inflated tourist trap prices, tactical formations of retired Japanese and millions of North-American kids screaming for mommy? Machu Picchu is a Very Much … [Read more...]
