March 20, 2011 by DaveLeave a Comment

Moon Minneapolis & St. Paul by Tricia Cornell This first edition book is one of the must have guides for exploring the Twin Cities. A number of full color maps are found in the front of the book followed by several useful itineraries. Did you know that a number of Minnesotan's enjoy ice cream during the winter. One ice cream shop even offers discounts as the thermometer drops! What is another favorite pastime of a visit to Minneapolis and St. … [Read more...]

Norfolk a surprise of food, arts and other delights

January 29, 2011 by Paul KandarianLeave a Comment

For me, the best part of traveling has to be the delight of surprise, finding unexpected pleasures in places you thought you had a handle on, even if you haven't been there before. Norfolk, Virginia, provided that in a great, grand way on a recent trip I took there, as I found it a place with scenes of the culinary, arts and sports stripe. I'd gone thinking, perhaps as a stereotypically snooty Northerner, "Well, old, southern … [Read more...]

Our Costa Brava Holiday

January 22, 2011 by James1 Comment

Last summer we went on holiday to Spain on the Costa Brava. We stayed at the Hotel Merce in Pineda de Mar (www.pinedademar.org). We loved this hotel. The food is very good, Spanish cuisine, with breakfast and abundant fruit and vegetables from the garden of the hotel owners. The rooms are good and with a cheap price. What distinguishes this hotel is its family and friendly atmosphere of the owners and staff of the Hotel. You feel in Spain. They … [Read more...]

Southern Jordan, Fun in the Sun

January 5, 2011 by Dave2 Comments

We are watching the sun slowly drop below the Egyptian skyline here on the edge of the Red Sea merely 3 clicks from the Saudi border. It is so quiet from our mountain side desert perch. 6 minutes walking gets us to the beach. The air is warm and intoxicating. We are on the Jordanian side now. This arm of the Red Sea contains the world's most northerly coral reefs. The Red Sea is full of coral and brightly colored fish. Just got in from a 1 … [Read more...]

May 25, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

(MAY 2010) - Over 2,600 American volunteers are credited for helping write a prosperous new chapter for Polish students through an innovative English teaching program. Working in service teams of 10 to 15, for two or three weeks at a time, volunteers from states across the nation lent their conversational skills to rural classrooms in central and southern Poland out of friendship. Siedlce Governor Zygmunt Wielogorski wants the country to know … [Read more...]

Magical Maui

April 1, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Magical Maui. While Maui is a fairly small island (two peninsulas separated by a flat section) there is a rich diversity of attractions and activities to easily fill up a week. Maui is touristy yet Maui is not touristy - the contrasts between the different parts of the island are great. For those who enjoy the manufactured life on vacation including resorts, condos and or beach life with all the amenities and development should look immediately … [Read more...]

Toss the camera and open your eyes. Tales from Peru

November 29, 2009 by ElizabethLeave a Comment

I just returned from watching the sun set on the sandstone cathedral in Arequipa's Plaza de Armas. I sat on the bench with ice cream cone in hand watching the trabajadores on their 3rd day of a hunger strike. Some hung on large crosses with steps to hold their weight and others lay on the ground in sleeping bags. This visual is a good entry point into the realities of South America. After so many trips to lesser developed countries I find … [Read more...]

Hot Licks Ice Cream, Fairbanks Alaska – July 2009

July 1, 2009 by DaveLeave a Comment

Hot Licks Ice Cream is a gourmet ice cream shop with two locations in Fairbanks. They have been serving delicious ice cream since 1986. We have enjoyed their specialty home-made cream at their College Ave location in Fairbanks on more than one trip to this great state (this is their original location). Choose from a variety of flavors including the unique Alaska Blueberry ice cream - made from hand picked wild blue berries that grow in the hills … [Read more...]

Fe y Alegra

"God, Brisa," I sighed, tightening my ponytail as we climbed the steep concrete stairs to the classroom in El Salvador. "I don't want to be here." "I know, me neither," Brisa whispered. "Mondays suck." We shared a withering smile, knowing that the next four hours would leave us emotionally exhausted. I took a deep breath, then stepped into the second grade classroom where we would spend our next hour. The classroom was green, like … [Read more...]
