Magical Maui

April 1, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Magical Maui. While Maui is a fairly small island (two peninsulas separated by a flat section) there is a rich diversity of attractions and activities to easily fill up a week. Maui is touristy yet Maui is not touristy - the contrasts between the different parts of the island are great. For those who enjoy the manufactured life on vacation including resorts, condos and or beach life with all the amenities and development should look immediately … [Read more...]

Toss the camera and open your eyes. Tales from Peru

November 29, 2009 by ElizabethLeave a Comment

I just returned from watching the sun set on the sandstone cathedral in Arequipa's Plaza de Armas. I sat on the bench with ice cream cone in hand watching the trabajadores on their 3rd day of a hunger strike. Some hung on large crosses with steps to hold their weight and others lay on the ground in sleeping bags. This visual is a good entry point into the realities of South America. After so many trips to lesser developed countries I find … [Read more...]

Hot Licks Ice Cream, Fairbanks Alaska – July 2009

July 1, 2009 by DaveLeave a Comment

Hot Licks Ice Cream is a gourmet ice cream shop with two locations in Fairbanks. They have been serving delicious ice cream since 1986. We have enjoyed their specialty home-made cream at their College Ave location in Fairbanks on more than one trip to this great state (this is their original location). Choose from a variety of flavors including the unique Alaska Blueberry ice cream - made from hand picked wild blue berries that grow in the hills … [Read more...]

"God, Brisa," I sighed, tightening my ponytail as we climbed the steep concrete stairs to the classroom in El Salvador. "I don't want to be here." "I know, me neither," Brisa whispered. "Mondays suck." We shared a withering smile, knowing that the next four hours would leave us emotionally exhausted. I took a deep breath, then stepped into the second grade classroom where we would spend our next hour. The classroom was green, like … [Read more...]

Matanzas

March 17, 2009 by Greg CoakLeave a Comment

So here's the idea: We had been trying to get out of the hotel for weeks, and finally, an opportunity presented itself. We were going to Matanzas, a town in the countryside of Cuba. It was the center of the slave trade in the time of its existence and in keeping with the trend of that trade, it created some of the most intriguing musical and cultural styles of the area. It is also completely untouched by tourism and it came highly recommended … [Read more...]

Iran; the most misunderstood country of the world!

January 2, 2009 by Kourosh ZiabariLeave a Comment

Over the years when talking to a foreign tourist who has come to my motherland for the very first time I've gotten used to hearing expressions such as "wow! I see you have restaurants in Iran!", or "Believe me Iran was not what I'd thought", "I never thought you had such a beautiful country" and so on. For the global public opinions and the mass majority who do not have any particular way of knowing a distant land rather than relying on the … [Read more...]

Exploring Havana: Queen of the Caribbean

May 18, 2008 by Habeeb SalloumLeave a Comment

To fully discover Havana both old and new, we decided to explore the city in two stages. In the morning, we would explore the new part by auto and in the afternoon roam through the old section by foot. I had visited Havana numerous times before, but I had not truly discovered the city. This time it was to be different. We began our exploration of Havana by car in the Miramar district, with its foreign embassies and plush hotels, in the new … [Read more...]

Mendoza, Argentina – Wineries

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Bienvenidos al tierra del Malbec - or in English, Welcome to the land of Malbec! Numerous wineries within the region make this wine and it is commonly served in local restaurants. Lesser common, is Bonarda, also a red grape and Torrontés, a white grape. With that said, Mendoza is known for Malbec but the region certainly produces wines from numerous other varietals. Within an hour's drive of the city of Mendoza are several hundred wineries. … [Read more...]

The British Aura of London is Capped by Stratford Shakespearean Festival

April 28, 2007 by Habeeb SalloumLeave a Comment

As well, like London, Britain's capital, the town is intersected by the River Thames and as is the case in most of the towns in England it is filled with green spaces consisting of pleasant parks and thousands of trees. They offer year round opportunities for outdoor leisure activities and have earned the city the nickname 'Forest City'. Located in southwest Ontario-roughly halfway between Toronto and the U.S. border, London, a city of some … [Read more...]

Trip to the Rhine in Germany

We flew British Airways from San Francisco Int. Airport, to Heathrow Airport, and then into Frankfurt Airport. Heathrow has a special assistance lounge. Ask for assistance when leaving your plane, and they will take you to the lounge. You give them your boarding pass and let them know what sort of help you need, and when the time comes for you to board your departing flight, they either let you know that someone will meet you at the gate with an … [Read more...]
