January 12, 2015 by Dave1 Comment

This security camera system swooped (their logo is a small bird) into the market in late 2014. This camera and setup is ideal for monitoring home or office setups and or keeping an extra "eye" on your belongings while you are on vacation (the recordings are viewable remotely via a website - see below for more details). El Salvador Wedding and Lago De Coatepeque

January 10, 2015 by Dave2 Comments

I am sitting on the edge of Lago De Coatepeque in El Salvador on an early morning - wakened early by the suns first rays hitting my face from my cozy spot on the floor, wedged between two sofas. Last night I vaguely remembered stumbling in around 2am. Lacking in the sleep department and heavy in the alcohol recovery, I feel surprisingly well for just a few hours of sleep. Last night was a blur, it was my cousin's wedding and it was epic. The … [Read more...]

The Magic of Arashan, Kyrgyzstan

January 10, 2015 by Dave4 Comments

Arashan is a trek that gets under your skin; it is a four to five hour hike up a rutted and rough dirt road alongside a raging river. From Karokal you can take mini bus number 350 - it is about 30 minutes to the drop off point. Or you can take a taxi for about 350 som. You can certainly hike this yourself in the summer - allow 4-5 hours along a very rocky rough dirt road that follows a quickly flowing river for much of the way until the road … [Read more...]

Bedtime Prayers – The Pilgrim’s Guide to Hotels in Jerusalem

January 7, 2015 by Spencer Ho1 Comment

Jerusalem is a vibrant modern city full of cultural events, restaurants, and a rich nightlife. But it is first and foremost a spiritual center of the Jewish people. Jews from all over the world come to Jerusalem. They take part in pilgrimages to holy sites, such as the Western Wall and Temple Mount. Often, they also celebrate bar and bat mitzvahs (coming of age ceremonies), weddings, and Jewish holidays in their ancestral homeland. Because … [Read more...]

Bahrain, A Diversity of Experiences on a Tiny Island

January 3, 2015 by Dave3 Comments

Today I headed out to explore the island with my driver Babu. Babu, like many expats who have come to Bahrain is from India - and came here to take part in the construction boom a number of years ago. He worked his way to supervisor - the boom ended and now works with the hotel I am staying at to drive people around the island. He asked me how difficult it was to get a visa to the USA. I had to tell him for a single man like himself, it could be … [Read more...]

Coming Home to Hocking Hills, Ohio

January 3, 2015 by Marianne RuaneLeave a Comment

We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time. -- T.S. Eliot The press trip to Hocking Hills, Ohio, that I was invited to sounded like just my kind of quirky fun – visits to a washboard factory and the world’s only pencil sharpener museum, candle and pottery-making classes, off-road Segway and zipline rides, and hikes - including a haunted one … [Read more...]

Romanian Castles – January 2015

January 1, 2015 by Dave3 Comments

For a beautiful escape from Bucharest, especially in the heat of summer - drive about 2.5 hours to Transylvania - up in the Carpathian mountains and spend some time enjoying and touring Peles Castle. The castle built to be a summer residence and was inaugurated in 1883. It was home to the King and Queen of Romania - eventually it was closed during the Communist period - but reopened in 1990.
